    High pitched squeal....

    ...in the transmission area

So, I just replaced my clutch and flywheel for an exedy OE replacement, and a Fidanza 8 lbs flywheel.

I got everything back together, went to start it, and it did not start right away. After several crankings later it started. However, there is a VERY loud and high pitched squeal coming from the transmission area, and some kind of smoke like.

I think it is either the starter, or the throwout bearing causing the noise.

I hope it is the starter. I am going to take that off tomorrow.

I think it could be the throw out bearing also.

It could only be the starter if the shaft if sticking in the "out" position and riding on the flywheel. A big coincidence for it to go bad if this is what it is, unless the flywheel is slightly too large in diameter or the teeth are not exactly the same as stock causing the starter shaft teeth to bind with the flywheel teeth.......

BTW Gary, when watching your flywheel at idle from the bottom sheet metal cover, does the flywheel seem to "wobble" or "oscillate" about 1mm back and forth? As in, it's not perfectly centered on the crank shaft. I have a faint whine noise coming from my 5spd around 80mph and noticed my flywheel is very slightly off center for some weird reason........might be worth checking for you though.

I talked to him today on the phone, he asked if i had any suggestions. i told him to drive it and see what it does. he said he dorve it for a little while and it went away now, must have been the throwout bearing.

I have my cover in place. I have not noticed any noises at higher speeds yet. But I have not hit interstate yet.

Actually, I stalled it once coming out of my garage, and after I restarted it the noise went away. I guess the throwout bearing had to be seated?
