    Strange Electrical Problem

Ok, so here's the deal...whenever I use my turn signal my tach and speedo needles start jumping around a lot, not like a lil twitch, they drop all the way to the bottom and then back up, and they do it in sequence with the flashing of the turn signal...but, it doesn't do it if I turn my hazards on...

I'm thinking that there is a short in the gauge cluster. Has anyone else ever experienced anything like this?

sounds more like a short in the steering column harness. tear it down and look around, following the l wires for the turn signals....

If thats the problem you'll see it.

What makes you think it's in the steering column? Is that because it doesn't do it when the hazards are on?

exactly. if it's when you use only one turn signal (inside the column) and not the hazards (not in the column) you narrow down where the short could be.

now to find it you could go from the gauges (the hard way) to the short, which is most likely not because the aren't exposed to the environment much and don't really move around.

or go from the signal switch in the column to the short and MAYBE not have to take the cluster out.

the reason you have the gauges go off when the signal is on is because the signals are usually operated on a ground. so the lights are getting power but aren't grounded. so no lights. that way you don't need to have multiple power wires to one light. you have multiple grounds. much safer.

Cool, sounds like a sound diagnoses, I'll start at the combination switch and work my way up to the cluster from there. Probably won't even be able to take a look at it until tomorrow or Sunday, but I'll update you guys when I've figured something out.

            Thanks guys.

It looks like this may be related to my alternator...

I just went to drop my friends off at the club and the needles started dropping for no reason, I noticed my lights were dim as well, interior and headlights...

I checked battery voltage, 10.8. Alternator was charging 10.6, then jumped to 13.4 and immediately dropped to 11.3. I think the voltage regulator is faulty...hopefully I make it to work in the morning, then I'll replace the alternator.

              ...25 miles on 11 volts, with a half-dead alternator FTL...wish me luck!

Made it to work, swapped alternators, problem fixed. Thanks for the help guys.
