    EGR Port Cleaning

I've seen a lot of threads on how to clean the EGR ports. My car failed smog miserably, but my EGR valve works just fine. It has to be that the ports are clogged. My problem is that I have an H22A1 intake manifold, so the ports are welded over. How should I go about cleaning the ports? Thanks.

I used a die grinder and ground them flat, then tapped the holes and installed port plugs so I never have to do that again...

So really all you need to do is get a Dremel and grind it down so you can remove the plugs.

That's what I was thinking. Seems like it will take a while though. Oh well.

If you felt confident, you could just use a drill bit and drill the ports.

Yeah just drill them. It doesn't take any confidence, you just want to remove the manifold so you don't get metal shavings into the engine.

The reason I said that is some people might not feel sure enough of themselves to drill a hole in the port.

That and I've actually seen a couple people get the hole too big to the point they couldn't get the EGR slugs that they bought from Honda to fit. And I've seen one idiot drill all the way through the EGR passageway and into the runner, real genius.

Of course you can always use Hondabond instead of the plugs/slugs and not worry about getting the hole too big. I just find the threaded inserts or even the OEM plugs/slugs easier to remove then Hondabond everytime you have to service the ports.

can't you like drill the hole and tap it, then get some really short bolts to put in the holes, then it would be easy the next time some one cleans the ports.

Good points indeed. I'm not sure Hondabond would get hard enough and might get sucked into the engine after startup. 2-part epoxy is a better route as it gets rock solid. I think next time I do mine I'll thread em and use the little pipe fittings or what ever they're called

Yeah I've seen Hondabond used in the EGR system a couple of times. One was to hold the old EGR plugs in place because they didn't want to go get new ones... talk about putting confidence in a product.

I grinded one down with dremel tool and drilled it. No big deal. I think I grinded too much though. Hopefully there's enough metal for the allen screw to hold onto.
