*** help!!!! My car is a gross poluter ***

well I got the car tuned last night since it was all wacked out since I bought it with the wrong ecu. It's bone stock, not even a headed or exhaust and it made 171whp, not bad. And it still has all the ac/ps shit hooked up. Anyways, I go to get smogged today. Found a guy that didn't care about the swap, but it failed horribly across the board. I assume it's not an internal engine problem since it made good power, I assume the engine is in good health... So what could be the main culprit? The last thing I wanna do is go replacing everything emissions related if it was just a disconnected hose or tweaked sensor.

    What are you failing on?

it could be many things such as your Catalytic Converter, 02 sensor, EGR Valve/Clogged EGR Ports, Spark Plugs.

Did you make sure your Catalytic Converter was HOT or Warmed up?

Post your HC and CO Levels, so people can possibly diagnose whats wrong with your car..

I'll get the numbers in a minute. They are way way high. Like in the thousands, when it's supposed to be a couple hundred.

        Alright ladies, drumroll please...

        And the results are in:

        15mph - max/measured

        Hc-87/224
        Co-.51/2.19
        No-701/1564

        25mph

        52/251
        .49/4.13
        730/752

Slowguy7 told me it was a new cat, I don't see how that's possible. It seems like everything but the engine is broken. =(

Well I always wanted a project, guess I got it.

make sure your car/cat are both warmed up. drive it for awhile, hit v-tech a couple times, and go to the smog place and leave it running while you fill out your paperwork..
          hot cat will help you.

i suggest cleaning your EGR and EGR Ports, and while your at it Change/Check your spark plugs, Change your Oil, and lastly get a new o2 sensor..

I know your probably all change your oil, but it does actually lower your emissions by a little.. Your numbers arent that high man, my del sol had higher gross pollution numbers then what you posted.. You will pass just takes patience, and some TLC..

drive the shit outta your car before you go. Hit VTEC a lot and get that cat HOT. It helps a TON. My car passed very easily w/ my H. Even Better than my F22 did 2 yrs ago.

I'm sure driving it hard helps, but that isn't going to account for the ridiculously horrible results I got. I would expect those results from a car with no cat. I hope a new one will help. I'm also going to do new cap, rotor, plugs and wires.

you mean you didnt do a tune up before you went to go smog?

                  list the rpm's as well.

rich and partial combustion, you sure the ignition timing is correct?

Uncombusted fuel, which I presume the wrong ECU could cause, getting down to the cat can foul it, if it ran with the wrong ecu for any period of time at all then the catalyst in the cat might be fouled so it's not able to reduce the NO count as it should. So in effect, you may currently be running without an effective cat. Sounds like you need a new cat if you want those numbers to improve. Make sure your O2 sensor is good too as that would play into the problem as well.

Running the car with a decent exhaust leak can create the same effect. In either case, sounds like you are right and putting a new cat in is the way to go, along w/checking the 02 sensor.

guy smog guy checked timing, so I assume it's ok. When I bought the car it had some jdm p72, but it was some funky 4ws or some shit. It drove horribly, but I figured a tune would fix it and it did. It runs great now, minus the smog issue.

How can I check I'd an o2 is working? Are there different degrees or working?or it either does or doesn't.

so are you running a P72? If so the p72 cant control the EGR which might be your problem.. A functioning EGR will save your ass on during smog tests.

If your running a P72, then take that out, put in a p13 and see what it does.

High NO is cause by high combustion temperatures, and a problem in the EGR system. You can lower the combustion temp by retarding the timming some.

Then remove your EGR valve and clean it out thoroughly. That should do the trick, unless the EGR ports are clogged then you will need to clean those too.

And yeah, you need to be running the P13
