    Distributor seal

I have an oil leak coming from under the distributor somewhere. There are two seals at the dizzy and it looks like one of them is leaking, I'm hoping it's not the one inside the dizzy as that one isn't a quick replacement, what's your best guess?:

P.S. As the last pic shows, the leak seams to be running directly on top of the coolant temp probe for the ECU pickup. This connector is soaked more than anything else.

just pull the dist. out and change the simple o-ring

wow...I wish my engine was that clean! but yeah that's what it looks like.
And any time a seal is leaking I have to ask...when did you do your t-belt last? once the seals leak is a good sign the t-belt is due...unless you're like me and just forgot to do the dist. oring at the t-belt change

Timing belt, dizzy seal & o-ring were all done at the same time, 33,000 miles ago with Honda OEM parts. I might go pick up a Felpro seal from Advance and see how that one does.

so the dizzy oring WAS replaced 33k ago...well that shouldn't be leaking.

Maybe on install it got crimped/pinched?

I doubt it, this leak just started, to my knowledge, about 3500 miles ago as I keep my engine free from grease as much as possible. And I do all of my own mechanic work and it was put on correctly, no pinches, cuts, nicks, and oiled well. I'll see when I pull it.

The only other place that could be leaking in that area is the head gasket, I just hope that's not the issue here.

Here are two sources I found to purchase that internal dizzy seal:

ooo...did you put liquid gasket at the bends where the gasket goes over the cam?

it can be fixed two ways.

                    1) buy a new distributor housing from honda (comes with new ignitor and costs about $100)

                    2) buy an aftermarket seal kit (that's not avalible from honda)

still, there's the remote chance that it's the o-ring that is between the head and distributor. looking at the pic, it's the internal one. later.

I'm about 95% sure it is not leaking inside the distributor because when oil gets inside the dizzy, it drips from that tab on the bottom that has the little cap screwed on with a Phillips screw. This oil leak is coming from either behind the dizzy or at the base of the dizzy. Hopefully I'll have time tomorrow to pull it off and verify.

where the dizzy connects to the camshaft? open and look in the dizzy cap housing maybe?

I pulled the dizzy and took it apart and evidently when I replaced the inner seal a while ago I installed it backwards (stupid! ). I was able to push it out pretty easily and installed it the correct way, which was tougher to get in than before so hopefully everything will be ok with it now.
