Just last night my tranny started refusing to go into 3rd gear. I was not driving hard at all. The RPMS will just shoot up as if it was in neutral when switching to thrid and sometimes if I let off the gas it will eventually go into third. Any idea on what this may be????

Tranny Slipping in 3rd

not sure on how to tell. Not throwing any lights. And it is only 3rd that is now evidently gone. Just outta no where. Didn't show any signs of problems. Just sorta decided that it didn't like 3rd all of a sudden. I have to hold it in second until my rpms get high enough to just go into 4th. It works fine doing that, but don't want to cause any further damage.Last edited by Sway; 08-11-2009, 05:02 AM.

would low fluid make it only miss one gear? I thought it would make it slip on all gears.Originally posted by iwork4mycb7 View Postif its auto just put some tranny fluid you probably ran out of it, that happen to my homie in his auto tranny it would just rev up and would move slowly, and it also happen to me but i needed a clutch. good luck anyways. and look for any tranny leaking.

Don't run out and buy a new trans', try the Triple Change first
I agree with 'iwork4mycb7', first and foremost, check the fluid level first.
If the level is fine, I suggest the following:
Drain your Automatic Transmission.
Clean any metal from the magnet on the drain plug.
Add one pint of Sea Foam Trans Tune. Add Honda ATF-Z1 to your transmission until you reach the FULL line on the dip stick.
Drive for one month and do this again.
Drive for another month and do this again.
At the start of the third month, if you're not satisfied with the performance of the transmission, drain the fluid and remove the Solenoids so that you can clean them with brake cleaner; remove the rubber gaskets and either change them or wash them with soap and water, be sure to toggle the Solenoid with battery voltage while cleaning with the hexanes (brake cleaner). Then, add one pint of Sea Foam Trans Tune. Add Honda ATF-Z1 to your transmission until you reach the FULL line on the dip stick.
Drive for one month and then remove the Sea Foam/Honda ATF and refill with Honda ATF-Z1.
If the problems do not resolve themselves at this point, inspect the Transmission Control Unit (TCU) for damage. The TCU inspection is only for the purpose of determining if you should purchase a new(er) Automatic Transmission and TCU or just the Automatic Transmission; I do not think you have a faulty TCU. Though for peace of mind, you may want to remove the TCU cover and inspect it now. You will be looking for any leaking capacitors, burn resistors, or corrosion.Last edited by James Matteu; 08-13-2009, 09:26 PM.1997 Honda Accord EX-V6:

if you need a trans I've got one, an H22A Auto LSD w/ 50k miles. I JUST pulled it for my 5spd conversion. All gears shifted great with no slipping. Only prob. is you're in FL and I'm in AZ lol.

Driving for a month is excessive
The tranny cycles ALL fluid within 3 minutes
Definately check the fluid.
Feel it with you fingers, when mine was gettin rough the fluid felt like sand.
I did a tranny drain and fill every paycheck for 3 times.
The Honda dealer uses a special pump machine the sucks the fluid out through the cooler hoses.
Also on a side note, GET A TRANNY COOLER!!!
My second tranny (with over 200K miles) has lasted longer than my original tranny that only had 100K
They looked over the fluid and it had gotten too hot.

Sounds like the 3rd clutch pack is worn, and the piston can't take up enough clearance to clamp the linings together.
Rebuild or replace.
Car Safety / General Servicing Checks --------Basic suspension checks

A "Finished" project car is never finished until its been sold.
If at first you don't succeed, Try again. Don't give up too easily, persistance pays off in the end.

I did this 4 days ago and now my tranny wont move from 1st
Check your fluid as my other accord I had a similar issue. when I checked to see if it had any it didn't even have the dip stick and every bump I hit it would leak out. not saying this is your cause but me adding more and getting another stick helped me
also if you are low check your lines to make sure theres no cracks as that was another factor on yet again another accord I had
