    HVAC Controls or Something Else?

It's getting colder outside so I've decided to break down and fix my heat issue. Here's the deal: Back in March we had a warm front come through which caused me to switch my temperature knob over to cool. Then it became cold again so I tried to switch it back over to warm, but the knob froze up and then something inside/behind the HVAC controls snapped audibly. There used to be a certain amount of tension in the switch/knob when I'd change from cool to warm, warm to cool, but after I heard the "snap," there was very little resistance in the knob. I took that to mean I broke whatever the knob's shaft went into.

Does this mean I'll have to replace the entire HVAC control box or could it be something else other than the control box?

pull the knob off and inspect it to make sure you didn't just break the knob.

other than that, it sounds like the cable came off or the part that holds it on broke off.

if you remove the dash cluster, you'll see the cable on the underside of the HVAC unit.

you can also switch the temp manually if you follow the cable to the black box under the dash on the passenger side. it's a small metal bar that you can slide with a little cable attached to it.

if you can't find it, i can get a pic. later.

      Is this it?

I tried tugging on it and on both plastic clips it attaches to but it wouldn't budge.

Also, by "dash cluster," do you mean the trim that goes around the air vents, instrument cluster, HVAC controls, radio, etcetera? If so, I took out the two screws in the top at the speedometer area and tried prying the rest but I didn't want to break it.

Hang on, Brian. I just had a thought. I'd bet that whatever I heard snap did so because that little bar there wouldn't budge, just as it wouldn't budge when I tugged on it. What could that mean? Oy vey. =S

yeah, i do mean the piece that goes around the vents, coin tray, ect. this will walk you through removing the cluster bezel. http://www.cb7tuner.com/vbb/showthre...luster+removal

there's also another place under the hood you can check. this heater hose has a valve on it that is opened and closeb by the cable.

also, here's a clip of me moving the bar.

          later.

Sweet. The valve under the hood worked. After monkeying with everything for a short time I discovered that I can move the bar (under dash) and valve (under hood) to warm if I move the switch over to warm first, then I can change it back to cool with the knob. It seems to only work one way, which is to the cold setting.
