    Electronic Ignition

    Hey, everybody -

I thought there would be a thread out there already, but I searched every forum that made sense, and couldn't find it...

Electronic Ignition... i.e. to replace the distributor with electronics...

How much? Brand names? How difficult?

I'm pretty sure I need to replace my ignitor, which is probably $100-ish... if I'm halfway to the cost of switching to electronic ignition, I'd consider it.

    Thanks in advance.

CB7s already HAVE electronic ignition. Or are you talking about coil-on-plug ignition? Or an aftermarket MSD type ignition?

$100 isn't even close to the cost of the only system I know of, which is AEMs COP setup.

I'm running an MSD setup on my H22a, the high rpms seemed to pull harder but it really wasn't that much of a difference like slapping on a cold air intake.
H22a they always smile before Vtec....

          sticking with OEM, then...

By "electronic", I meant spark control tied in to the ECU - I wasn't sure what was available for CB7.

A couple of years ago, I read something about the benefits of "electronic" ignition, and I guess I've been feeling a little inadequate since then with my distributor cap based system.

But with all the love for the OEM system, "old school", or not... I guess I'll stick with it, and just replace the ignitor.

          Thanks, all.

You have electronic ignition. You're thinking of distributor-less ignition. There's a significant difference.

To get rid of the dizzy, you'd have to go to a system that used individual coil packs, which would mean an ECU that was programmed for them, and I just don't think you'll find one that's worth the time and money to install.

Yea, i wondered about that, I have S2000 coil packs and I think they fit.
              But what makes the ignitor...ignite?
Is there a seperate ignition signal for each cylinder?
I thought there was 4 cylinder detection assemblys?
I havnt dug in a dizzy in a while...

AEM sells the camshaft position sensor (replaces the dizzy) that gets connected to a stand alone ecu along with the coils. the ecu determines when each coil needs to fire. it's supposed to improve performance by having 4 coils split the work that one coil usually does.

if your car is stock or mostly stock you'd pretty much be throwing a ton of money away and likely see no performance gain whatsoever.

no need at all for an aftermarket DIS, unless you are in need of very precise spark control.

                  you're not.

                  replace the igniter.
