    More a/c woes

As suggested by members, I went to the junk yard to acquire a full ac kit because my car did not have any a/c components. I got the a/c installed and filled and it blows cold air!!! But my header is about a quarter inch away from the a/c line. From basic a/c knowledge, if I can keep heat away from that line, it will work more efficiently. So I dug around in my dads service truck for some of that a/c line insulation thats like a tar that you just stick on the line. I insulated that line that was closest to the header along with any other exposed line. So in my excitement I go down the road and my a/c DOESNT BLOW COLD ANYMORE!!! Its enough to keep the sweat off but earlier my boogers turned into icicles. I can't understand why this happened. My condenser fan isn't working at the moment, but my a/c was blowing cold earlier!!! There are new o-rings all the way around, no blockages anywhere, flushed all lines before installation, and made sure there were no leaks with a leak sniffer. Also, because the tap that I purchased from advance auto was wrong, I had to use R414B (Hotshot) which is a R134a replacement and has worked great on all of my vehicles without problem. I will be purchasing another condenser fan hoping that maybe this will solve my problem of it not cooling going down the road when it cooled great earlier. The sight glass on the drier has a little bit of bubbles but it was purposely done that way to compensate.

Don't run the system without the fan working right.... It can damage the compressor / system.

While we were charging it, I had a dyno fan on it when I was filling it and it was doing awesome then and doing awesome going down the road. I rarely sit in traffic because I live in the country.

You pulled vacuum and held it before you filled it?

            Find and fix the leak.
Did you put any leakdye in before you filled it?

Also find out why the fan isn't running, check the fuses and relay.

Well I got a Prelude fan until I can get to the junker and get another one. I don't use dye because I have a thing that sniffs freon. It pisses me of super bad because all the o rings were replaced and the previous car held freon like a boss.

I would also use 134a, Idk what 414 is...but either R12 or R134a is what's recommended. You might have a leak in one of the discharge lines, but the only way to check would be to dye it and use those special UV glasses with a blacklight. It coudl even be around the Evap area inside the car too so I'd look it ALL over to make sure you seal that leak.

Ya know I can almost guarantee that its the evap. Thats the only thing I did not use from the junkyard because it already had the new expansion valve from years ago. The junkyard unit held pressure like no tomorrow.

R414b is what the professionals use to replace R12 and R134a because it mirrors R12. As of right now I am unsure what oil to use with R414b. I guess im going to find out.

Found it! The evaporator had a massive leak in it right where the cap tube screws into the low side line. It didn't have an o ring for some reason as I thought I had put one on it. I put an oring on it and it still leaked in the same place. I stuffed the evap in I got from the scrapper and it holds pressure like a boss except that expansion valve is bad. It cycles on and off and only cools for less than a minute until it turns off on low pressure. So now I got to rip that bitch back out to switch valves. But with a thorough check of the rest of the system, I have absolutely no leaks anywhere else. I have to rewrap that low side line and re gas it AGAIN. So I am guessing it was my evaporator when I was having problems with my a/c leaking the first time.

Well today I went for a drive and my a/c was icey cold (it was almost 100 today and I had to turn it down!) and it didn't cycle. Hopefully the expansion valve caught some of that vibration from the car and broke loose or something. Ill check the pressures this weekend to see if I am running the correct readings just to be sure I don't have to go ahead and replace it.

Hopefully this thread will help others getting their a/c problems worked out.

Well good job finding the problem and being persistant fixing the a/c. Gotta have the a/c!! Especially in Tx. So, I guess this has turned out better than your idea of some contraption unit inside the car huh

Personally, if I had of purchased a sooped up alternator, there would have been less install head aches. However, I did spend less on the oem stuff than a portable unit haha. It was $125 from PAP with warranty, $12 for o-rings, $8 for PAG46, $15 for the flush, and some other dumb misc things.

The only thing I hate now is that my engine bay has become cluttered again and its slightly annoying that the a/c gets in the way when I go to work on something. But hey! Im freezing my nuts off in this hot ass weather and it doesn't miss a beat! That goo I put on the low side lines is helping cool thats for sure. I just have to reapply it at the compressor again so that the header (about 1/4" away!) won't heat up my freon. I am also thinking about trying to find a slim fan to go on the front of the condenser for much better air flow.
