    Harmonic Balancer Bolt Came Loose

Well yesterday my girl was driving home and heard a noise so she got out and looked under the hood and saw the Harmonic Balancer woobling back and forth on her H22. Luckily we were meeting up to go shopping and I tried to tighten it up in the parking lot without success. So I got it as tight as I could and decided to try to limp it home cuz I wasn't far and she had just drove further. Once I started working on it I noticed that the chuck key came out a little to where it won't allow the bolt to tighten all the way up. I tried to take the lower timing belt cover off but it won't come out from it being a tight squeeze. So now I am at the point of pulling the motor out to take off the cover, belts and get a new chuck key in there and put it all back togethter and drop it back in. Can anyone enlighten me on a easier way or can I get the new chuch key and slide the old one out and slide the new one in? PLEASE HELP

remove the D/S motor mount, and possibly the cross bar going from the front crossmember to the rear crossmember to be able to lower the engine a couple inches.

Then my cv axle and the torsion bar will be in the way to get the cover off. But I may try this. I know I can pull the motor in 2 and a half hours but i dont want to drain the radiator and manual trans fluid in order to do so. It just sucks.

That's what the Helms manual says to do. Remove those two things and it should be cake.

If I got to take the belts off to get the chuck key in should I have to replace the water pump even if it is 5 months old

if it were me, i'd get a new crack pulley bolt also. no telling if the threads where damaged by the ''wobble''. later.

You are lucky my bolt snapped in two, and bent a couple valves in the head, then I had to take the broken end out of the block,I had to end up welding a smaller bolt to the piece to get it out with the engine in the car, so your job should be a piece of cake. The funny part is the day before I was pushing 14 pounds of boost down the highway, it snapped when I was cruising through the city showing my visiting sister the sights.

Yeah I didn't think of getting a bolt too. Thanks to both of you. I didn't use locktight last time and the damn thing came off and I torqued it down and 4 and a half months later it causes a wobbling harmonic balancer.

The pump is only $30.00 and I don't want to put it all back together just to have it leak out of a weap hole. Are you sure I will be fine cuz I have tried to get by before without doing a waterpump before and had to go back in a couple days later to change it out.

That really sucks I did get very lucky. I would have been very being that the motor has only been in the car since April.

A 5 month old water pump will be fine........ as long as nothing damaged it which in your situation isn't likely. I've had similar situations with no adverse efects.

Be sure to re-tap the threads on the crank nose.

Use engine oil on the threads when torquing it.

Well thanks to coupes being local and coming to give a hand we got it done tonight and just finished about a hour or less ago. I was so close to the key coming out it is amazing. Literally probally 2-3 mm from it coming out and me saying bye bye to the new motor. But if it wasn't for this site and having a chance of meeting someone local then I would still be working on it. Went to the dealer yesterday and bought a new bolt and key. While I was there also picked up manual trans fluid and my girl bought a puppy that say I Love my HONDA for her kid. Thank You to everyone that chimed in on stuff to do too. THANK YOU CB7TUNER.COM!!!
