    Oil Pump Installation

I just got done rebuilding my engine and i'm more than 1/2 done, but I might have messed up on the oil pump installation. When I installed it, I forgot to put in all the bolts.

The relevance of this is the liquid gasket I applied when I first put the pump on. The manual says to put the pump on not more than 20 minutes after you apply the liquid gasket. It specifically says, "Do not install the parts if 20 minutes or more have elapsed since applying liquid gasket. Instead, reapply liquid gasket after removing the old residue."

It was 20 minutes or more after I completely put it on with all the bolts. Has anyone ever done this and do you think I can just leave it as it is?

When I first put the oil pump it seemed to be sealing fine even with 4 missing bolts. I just forgot to put in all of the bolts until I got done with the water pump which was over 20 minutes later.

Should be fine so long as you pulled it in diagonally flat with the bolts you fitted.

That is - You didn't put the first bolts right next to each other rather than placing them immediately diagonal/opposite each other.

    EG for 4 bolts
    12 and 6 oclock / 3 and 9 oclock is OK
    12, 1, 2, 3 oclock Not OK.

If at first you don't succeed, Try again. Don't give up too easily, persistance pays off in the end.

Thanks for the reply. I think that's how I tightened them down, I'm pretty sure. Even if I didn't, its only the top left corner of the pump that I missed, the other sides were snugged down. The right oil sprocket side was snug, as was the bottom left and right.

Here's a pic of my engine before I tightened them down so you understand exactly what I mean. All four bolt holes are visible, two are above the left balance shaft,

Its beautiful in teal. What a great work of mechanical art an engine is.

If it was my engine I will reinstall the oil pump before I ask such question on any forum. The engineers of Honda thought it was necessary to use that many bolts.

Oil is blood for your engine. Oil pump is the heart pumps that blood.

Missing bolt? Maybe "OK" if you feel lucky.

          "Should be fine"?? Maybe.

Would I complete this engine with one bolt known to be missing? NO.

Sorry if I didn't make myself clear enough but I have all of the bolts, my question was about the liquid gasket that I applied. The manual says not to wait more than 20 minutes before installing the pump after putting on the gasket; it did end up taking me more than 20 minutes to button up the whole pump, as you can see in the pic, there are 4 missing bolts which I forgot to apply. I did install the all bolts, but I am wondering if I should go back and replace the liquid gasket.

That would mean taking off the oil pan though because there are 2 studs on the pump which are bolted to the pan. I really don't wanna take off the pan.

Do what you want to do. It's no my engine.

Take off pan to correct now. Or take off engine later IF it does not hold oil when you run. Or leak later. Choise is yours.

It would be wise to do it now before you go any further as once it's is the bay it will be a real pain.

I vote for fixing/dealing with it now too. It'll take an hour or so to do it now, a day or so to do it later.

                      Fuck that.
