    Tranny oil change?

    Hi All

I have no idea what type of oil to change my tranny oil w/ -nor- how to drain it properly.

Now, I'm sure I should use Honda ATF-- but I can't afford it. I DO however have $40 FREE on my auto zone card.

So what OTHER type of oil could I use for my tranny? Also, how do I drain it properly, and how much volume(oil) do I need? Thanks, I am gonna keep searching on here, but I have a hard time finding the damn info I need.. Thanks again Members

There is a VERY specific way to refill your auto tranny, it's not as simple as just draining and refilling it. I do not know the exact procedure, I have a manual. But I'm sure if you look around a little bit here, you will find it. And yes, I would only use Honda ATF.

Ouch. Im totally hoping I could use some other oil.. I don't have any $$$-- but $40 worth of autozone rewards.

And the specific refill and drain. I'm still searching as we speak

I havn't done an transmission fluid change on a auto before. But I'm pretty sure you also need a type of fluid pump to pump in the tranny fluid. It's not as simple as to pour in fluid like an oil change.

Very easy. First, you should use only Honda's fluid. You will need about 2.5Qt.
The drain plug is on the passenger side in the front by the front wheel. You only need a 3/8 ratchet. You might need an extension on the ratchet. I usually remove the tire to get more room to work on. But you either get under jack the wheel up. The drain plug facing wheel. The plug is not facing down like the oil drain plug. You'll see it as soon as the wheel come off. If a 3/8" doesn't fit the plug, then it's the wrong plug.
BTW, there's pan or pan gasket to replace. You might need an aluminum crush washer to replace. But if the one is not that bad then reuse it.

            Good luck.

              This is close.
It's 2.7 quarts. There is no pan or gasket. There is a crush washer, I replace it every few changes(Once a year).

For all practical purposes, there is no trans filter. You don't need to worry about it.

Is this a total amount for ATF in Accords?

When I did complete flush and fill on my wife's Mazda 3, it took 9 qts. Did it in three drain and fills, three qts each time.

My Accord is MT. I'm just curious.

No. That's just for the change. The total amount is more. Something like 7 or 9 quarts. I have no idea though

The shipping they charge you is outrageous.

Some one has to bring it to you if you are not going to go out and buy them from Honda dealer.

If you don't want to pay shipping charge, don't buy from them, then. What's the point of mentioning about their shipping charge too much?
