H22 timing belt change, what should I expect?

Hello people I would like to hear from the ones that have change a timing belt on a cb7 with the h22, First question how did you remove the crank pulley? I have read several things about this, like you have no room to use the crank pulley tool and that you have to drop the engine a bit to make room in order to use it true or false.

Question two, how did you deal with the auto tensioner? Did you use the special tool to remove and install it? How easy is it to spill the oil that's in it?

    Thanks in advance.

    hello

the crank pulley bolt can bring the whole job to a stand still if you dont have the right tools to remove it.
I am fortune it enough to have a 1/2 impact and big air compressor which usually does the trick.
sometime it requires a little more so i also have "the big gun" a 3/4" impact and that works 95% of the time.
although I've had crank pulley bolts on so tight I had to use my oxy acetylene torch to get it really hot before the crank pulley would budge.

for this reason ive had guys come by my shop to get the bolt broke loose then I retighten it but not super tight so they can get it out when they do the t-belt job at home.

as for that auto tensioner it is a piece of junk so throw it away and install a manual tensioner.
you can do the h23 tensioner conversion or make it simple and get the KAIZENSPEED h22 tensioner

here is a pic of my h22 with balance shaft delete and manual tensioner.

Thanks man I appreciate the info I have access to a air impact and compressor and heat so I have that covered. As for the auto tensioner I don't plan on doing any engine work at this moment just in stock form, so I figured reusing the auto tensioner would be ok to reuse. But if to do decide to delete it, I would use the one in the link you posted, thanks again!

thats cool I am happy to help and if you can avoid bending some valves from the failed auto tensioner thats even better
I will tell you from experience from doing t-belt on H22 I will inspect the auto tensioner by peeling back the rubber dust boot and every time i find the brown liquid pouring out.

I would never reuse that auto tensioner.

I would definitely NOT reuse the auto tensioner, it WILL fail on you and you'll be looking at replacing a couple valves at the very least.

an H23 manual tensioner conversion is only about 60-65 bucks using all Honda OEM parts, so...its your call. My coupe's been swapped for about 50k miles and has no issues, running strong.

Thank you very much, good advice there I read a bit about the balance belt delete it's a lot more than I can tackle, I think for now changing to a manual tentioner is a good idea.

i have not seen any negatives from deleting the balance shafts on several engines.
i will tell you that there is some hype about gaining hp and i dont believe there is a significant hp gain.

however hp is not the reason i delete the balance shafts.

the biggest benefit is increased oil pressure to the bottom end .

kaizenspeed claims 8 lbs of increased oil pressure

Yeah don't reuse that auto tensioner. They are good for maybe 90k miles and then they fail. Either replace with a new one or do the manual conversion as others suggested.
