    Transmission Whining and Rattling

Well started up my car today and I heard a slight rattling sound, thought maybe it was the exhaust. When I started driving i could hear a whining sound. When I got to my destination I popped the hood to listen. The rattling and whirring is coming from the trans. Sounds like a couple pennies in a can and the whining sounds like a gear drive on a muscle car. The whining goes up and down with rpms when revving the motor, and is much louder under load in each gear. When idling if I press the clutch there is no change. If I put the shifter to a gear (without actually putting it in gear) the rattling stops until I release the clutch pedal. Whining never stops. It has resistance going into 3rd like it gets hung up half way. Doesn't like to go into 4th all the time. Reverse is a biatch to get into but once i do it clunks when I start to back up. If i try to go through the gears while stopped, it grinds in 5th. It popped out of 1st a couple times today when accelerating. Input? Ideas? The last few weeks it's been getting harder to put in gear, I was planning on replacing the master cylinder this week. Am I too late, is the trans toast? Clutch is 2 years old 5sp has almost 300k. Sorry if long winded trying to remember every detail.

Obviously there is a problem inside the gearbox.
    Fix or replace it.

Thanks for the generic input. Well I got underneath, looks like the axle output shaft? seal is leaking, pulled the drain plug and got about 2 ounces of oil out of it, going to refill and hope there isn't too much damage done.

Looks like you will need a new tranny soon. The differential are pretty much gone when it starts to whine. I had that problem with my old 87 Corolla. This happens before I knew any thing about cars years ago. The mechanic service the tranny and differential. He forgot to refill the differential. He never took responsibility. He blame the car being old. I had to spend $700 and almost a year to get the right tranny in there.
The axle seal leaking a little is ok if you have fluid in there. But if the level is empty or dry. It's deadly to the differential.
I would drain the tranny fluid and replace new to see how much shavings you got coming out as our CBs differential and tranny are together.
