    Dizzy Leaking Again

Well I changed all the seals (3 total) to include inner and outer shaft and the housing seals. I did this about a month ago because I had oil from the housing and where it meets the valve cover. Today, I ran my hand underneath the housing and fresh oil (a good amount) on my gloves.

Not sure if this means I have to take the distributor off again and look for something else? All o-rings are brand new and OEM from Majestic Honda.

    Any advice?

    Thanks in advance.

Could it be leaking from the valve cover where it goes over the cam cap? Those bottom corners are an area that is prone to leaking. I always use Honda bond (Ultra Grey Permatrex) in those corners.

Good point I did see oil there and recently changed the valve cover gasket, I did not use the sealer. Where do I get some?

Also wondering if it is that would the oil make its way to the bottom of the dizzy housing?

You can get the Permatex sealant at most auto parts stores and you get Honda Bond from the dealership.

I have personally seen people chase distributor oil leaks for ever and it ends up being the valve cover gasket. It will leak in the corner and run down the back side edge of the distributor housing. It does look like it's coming from the bottom of the distributor. If you remove the distributor and see oil half way up the backside of the housing it is more than likely the VC gasket.

Also, I'm thinking if I open the distributor it should be dry inside, if it is then it definitely is the VC. I'll check tomorrow and update.

After tightening the valve cover down, did you tighten it again around a week later? Just adding anything that could possibly help.

I torqued it to spec, I think it was 10Nm all bolts. Meaning no, just torqued and left it. I followed service manual and did not see Honda bond mentioned at all.

I don't know if it says it in the manual. But I usally put some in the rounded part of the VC. I use permatex ultra grey. Mainly because I can get it easily and Its cheaper than hondabond.

I also used Honda Bond on my VC gasket.

Found the leak, now need advice

Well well well, it was an internal leak after all which leaves me stumped. The seal was ordered from Ebay, NOK brand (imprinted on seal) for the shaft of a TEC Distributor. The O-ring on the outside is perfect, no leak. The internal ones seems like a loose fit, just not tight enough around the shaft and oil was pouring into the distributor making its way to the cap seal and leaking out.

Again, the internal seal inner diameter is just shy of a snug fit, but the external diameter fit perfectly into the internal slot.

NOW...where to get the right seal, or to try a few different ones out? I left the distributor off so I quickly order the seal and move on.

The seal I ordered was NOK BH3888E0.

Plus side, got a new fuel filter in!

Also, I noticed I placed the internal backwards, the spring facing internal and not externally. Still do not see how that would allow so much oil into the housing. I forgot to use some fine grit sandpaper on the shaft, noticed some crud going back to the garage. Not enough to matter, but I guess little stuff make oil move.

^A few things here: was there a slight groove worn into the shaft from the old seal being so hard? That's what happened to the shaft on my hitachi distributor (95 odyssey), the old seal was rock hard, it wore a groove in the shaft. To counter this I drove the new seal in further than flush so the lip rides on a diff. spot of the shaft.

Are you saying you put the seal in backwards? So the garter spring faces the cap/rotor? And not the camshaft? Well, I believe all/most oil seals are designed w/ rotation in mind (directional veins in the rubber). So technically you put a clockwise oil seal in a counter clockwise situation. That could have something to do w/ it.

The shaft does need to be clean, it should come right off w/ your finger nail and carb cleaner.

You're right I saw a groove in mine too?! I'll keep it in mind when the new one arrives express in a couple of days. You're correct, I had the garter spring facing the cap, my error. I will seat it further and correctly.

But I did have the right part number right?

Yeah, try it again w/ a new seal. Funny you have a groove to. I guess try your best to have the lip of the seal not in the groove you have. Yep, TEC units use the BH3888 seal and NOK is Honda OE I believe, you should be good to go. Also, dunk the seal in motor oil before you install it.
