Help, AT problem, throwing Code 15 and Code 4

I got this problem now with my automatic transmission. It seems like its slipping when going from 1st to 2nd, its like its in neutral and it can't find the right gears. The speedometer is not working either. I pulled the codes and it listed a code 4, which is a speed sensor, and a code 15. Code 15 concerns me a lot. Code 15 15-Kick down switch circuit shorted.


Both of these problems started happening after I drove on the highway. Specifically it was after I downshifted to pass a semi that was in the right lane. It was at 4,000 rpms at about 55 mph. Now my transmission is acting bad.

It doesn't slip all the time it just seems to whenever the speedometer stops working.


Please help, I need to fix this. I don't know if the transmission is bad or what.

0-Transmission control unit (TCU) faulty.
1-Lock-up solenoid 'A' circuit open or shorted.
2-Lock-up solenoid 'B' circuit open or shorted.
3-Throttle Position Sensor circuit open or shorted.
4-Vehicle Speed Sensor open or shorted - No signal from speedometer.
5-Shift Lever Position Switch circuit shorted.
6-Shift Lever Position Switch circuit open.
7-Shift Solenoid 'A' circuit open or shorted.
8-Shift Solenoid 'B' circuit open or shorted.
9-Counter shaft or transmission speed pulse generator open or shorted.
10-Coolant Temperature Sensor open or shorted.
11-Engine RPM (Ignition coil signal) open or shorted.
12-(No code 12 used)
13-Main shaft speed pulse generator open or shorted.
14-Linear (line pressure control) solenoid open or shorted.
15-Kick down switch circuit shorted.

replace the vss and go from there . if the vss goes bad it can cause your car to do wacky things.
edit : if cloudasc takes a look or you pm him he can help brake down the codes for you . he did this for me to under stand them better.

Thanks for the input. Last Fall I had the same problem except it was only with the speed sensor. I found out one of the pins on the wiring connector going to it was completely missing. To fix it I put some old wiring in the place of the pin and it worked. Now the problem has come back to haunt me.

In my official Helms manual, a code 15 for S light is,

-Disconnected NM speed sensor connector
-Short or open in NM speed sensor wire
-Faulty NM speed sensor

Symptom - Transmission jerks hard when shifting


Code 4 S light is the exact same thing except it has a different symptom,

-Disconnected NM speed sensor connector
-Short or open in NM speed sensor wire
-Faulty NM speed sensor

-Symptom - Lock-ip clutch does not engage







I did check the ohms resistance of the speed sensor as the Honda manual told me to and it registered 1091 ohms. The manual said it should have been a 400-600 ohms reading. Does this mean my speed sensor is bad? If it is not bad, the manual instructs me to check the TCU terminals for continuity as well.


I think it was the faulty speed sensor connector with the missing tooth that caused the problem. I found one on ebay. I should be able to graft this into the wiring harness easily right?

i don't know about using parts that aint meant for our cars . I say go to the junk yard and get the plug from another cb . then buy a oem vss bran new .

that is out of spec . the issue with the lock up can be caused by the bad vss so replace it first .

Its too late, I ordered the plug. It should be the exact same though

Either way basically I can tell you that its probably not the VSS that is bad. Know why? Because its a low-mileage JDM transmission! The sensors are hardly been used. BUT, is it possible the sensor got shorted out because of the missing pin in the connector?


Then again I could be wrong about all this. Thanks for you advice, let me know what you think.

I am stock with bolt ons. Besides half OS pistons, that's it.

I don't know I thought it could have been from something else. It was so weird how it stopped working like that, I thought I damaged something in the transmission cause its never acted like it was slipping before. It never did that before when the VSS wasn't working.

I can't help you with the code 15, I know jack squat about autos, but I can tell you that your VSS is toast, you are way out of spec. Yes that plug will work just fine, cut your current plug about 6 inches up, just in case you have any corrosion in the wiring. Before cutting make sure the wire colors are the same, or take notes of which are which. If you need another VSS, send me a PM.

i have bought jdm transmission and it came with a bad vss .and ebay sellers will tell you any thing to make a quick buck never believe them . listen to dj he knows a bit more than me about the wiring .

acura and honda even though are the same company are not compatible with out modifying .

This statement is completely false in this instance, that is your standard Honda/Acura 3 pin connector.

every Acura i have seen has used green round plugs . thanks for clearin that i will delete that portion .

MOST of the non grey colored plugs that are round are only 2 pin connectors.

ya i don't know much about acura .witch leads me to believe the harnes is completely different other then what i have seen on my dads 3rd gen ls . back on track .
op just replace the vss with that connecter and reset the ecu and tcu . once that is done start the car and let it run for a bit to warm up .( warm up is just my thing ) . then take it for a drive . if code 15 still comes on then you will need to replace the shift silonodes . i will post pics of them tomorrow .
