I've seen a few cars converted to coil over plug....what is the point? I thought it was basicly the same function just newer technology.... Does anyone know if there are any benifetes to this I'm just curious

The benefit is a better resolution for accurate electronic control of ignition timing. Lets just say that it's more effective than turning a distributor housing. As well as it removes any energy lost that occurs across the distributor cap and rotor as well as resistance in the plug wires. It feeds all of the coils energy directly to the spark plug.
There are performance, emissions and fuel economy gains that can be had with a COP setup. That being said, the cost to switch a single coil system over to an individual coil setup may not be worth it to some. It would be a long term investment if you were just looking for fuel economy.
Now if you have a highly modified N/A or high boost F22 - H22 and are looking for that last .001s at the 1320. It would pay off with proper tuning.Last edited by GhostAccord; 05-23-2013, 08:54 PM.

Exactly.... the OEM Honda distributor ignition is pretty efficient.... Your gains on a stock engine wouldn't cover the $2k it would cost to convert.
Hondata COP setup
Hondata S300 Unit = $490.00 (does not include modified OBD1 ECU)
Chipped ECU = $100-$200
Complete ET Hondata COP kit = $879.93
Tuning = $200 - $500
Approx. Total = $1870
AEM COP setup
AEM EMS = $850 - $1300 (EMS-4 or EMS V2 Plug and play)
AEM EMP = $320
AEM Pencil coils = $275
Tuning = $200 - $500
Approx. Total = $2020
Of course there are used items that you can pick up to save some money
Or you could go the DIY route.
MegaSquirt III = $380 (DIY) $580 (Assembled)
4 K20/24 Honda coils = $50-$100 (used)
Tuning = $400 - $600 (not many MS tuners/may take longer)
Approx. Total = $1080
The DIY route is definitely not a plug and play COP option.

Also although it may not apply to you, many places that have emissions regulations (including all of CA), will not allow you to switch to a c.o.p. You can upgrade your coil, wires, plugs...but switching over to a true c.o.p. is generally not legal. As can be seen on AEM's website where all their ignition componets say they are not for use in CA.
