    Third gear grind....wtf!?

So I just bought my second CB today because I was plowed by a tow truck yesterday. So I buy a 5 speed coupe pretty clean, starts right up, no technical issues......until I hit third gear.

So my third gear grinds UNLESS car revs fall all the way back to idle and THEN I put into third. If I shift to third any other time it has a slight grind. So my question is this.

Is it a synchro? Is my third just bad because some idiot couldn't drive? Is there an easy fix? And if there is I would really appreciate a link to the diy or info on how to do it.

That is one of the MOST common CB problems.
Syncro is gone, You can TRY fluids, But they are only a bandaid.

Replace the box, or if your keen, replace the syncro.

A "Finished" project car is never finished until its been sold.

If at first you don't succeed, Try again. Don't give up too easily, persistance pays off in the end.

What's the name of the box so I can go get on and replace it? I think I seen a pic of one but can't remember what it is called. Has a little gear on the end right?

No bro. By box he means the gearbox(transmission)
Try changing your fluid to syncromesh. See how it acts.

Definitely change the transmission fluid. My old sedan would grind horribly into third and bad into second if you tached it up. I think the previous owners put the wrong fluid in. I changed to Honda MTF.

Put in Honda MTF run it for a bit (500 miles or so) and change it again. Do that a few times and it MAY help.

The damage is done, but the correct fluid MAY help. After I changed the fluid a few times third would grind LESS often (cold weather made it worse).

Got that car with 125k and got rid of it at 210k. Same transmission.

And OP, your signature is HUGE.

dont put that syncromesh in your transmission, it will destroy it(atleast speedfactory said so) and i would trust them, try changing it with oem fluid.

I run Pennzoil Synchromesh in my transmission. I haven't noticed any negative side effects; it runs smoother than with 10W30, which is what is recommended in the factory service manual.

My third gear grinds as well. It usually only does so above about 3k RPM, though. You can try double clutching; engage the clutch while shifting through neutral, and then disengage to shift into third. This will rev-match the engine and transmission and should allow you to shift into gear without a crunch. Make sure you have good fluid in there as well; a fluid change doesn't cost much or take much time at all with a pair of jackstands and a ratchet set.
