    tps sensor

So my tps sensor I assume is bad , because the car runs really nicely with it unplugged vs plugged in.

Infact I actually wouldn't mind just leaving it unplugged if it weren't for the fact that it doesn't shift into third till I'm going 30. Which makes city driving really noisy and wasteful.

I took the throttle body off my parts car and am going to swap it out. seeing as the tps sensor itself doesn't have bolts holding it on but instead little flush screw things that you have to dremel out.

I'm wondering if it can be installed without adjusting it. I assume the parts car one was already adjusted so it should work? it same off a 93 ex wagon and will go on a 92 lx wagon so they should be both adjusted the same?

ok so I changed the throttle body and now the engine idles very high. I didn't even plug in the tps sensor yet , what gives?

Vacuum leak. Make sure all of the old gasket material has been removed and that you use a new gasket. Also make sure that there are no disconnected or cracked vacuum hoses,

Just out of curiosity, did you happen to test your old throttle position sensor before you replaced it?

and now the idle surges and it's pouring coolant out from the front somewhere........

ya know , god forbid I ever touch an engine. I don't even know why I bothered touching it. I should have just left it broken because at least it worked.

As for testing the original , I unplugged it and the car ran and drove better , so I assume that's a pretty good indication something was wrong with it.

Not always... depends on what the ECU is reading. If you unplug something PGMFI worthy, TPS included, The ECU will drop into limp mode and run off predetermined VE tables without sensor input. It is better to check for codes and test sensors then to replace parts based on a hunch or assumptions.

Was your check engine light ever on?

nope cel only came on when i unplugged the sensor otherwise it is never on.

I don't get how changing a tps sensor causes coolant to pour out of the front. air bubbles?

Dude, sometimes you have to fuck up to learn.

There's a coolant hose that goes from under the throttle body to the intake right near the bypass hose. There's two of them. Make sure they're not damaged, and what do you mean from the front?

Trace the tiny 16 hoses from the intake and make sure they're not damaged. Check the throttle body/TPS gaskets too, if you reused them I'll bet that's the leak.

Don't give up. A 20+ year old car is gonna have some problems, just enjoy the experience and learn.

It's not leaking from the two hoses it's just coming out from under the radiator somewhere. cant see because it's behind the bumper.

Every hose and clamp is exactly where it's suppose to be and is tight.

I just drove this car for 40 minutes today and although it was in "limp" mode because the tps sensor wasn't plugged in it at least worked.

I must have got air into the coolant somehow and it blew something up

Air is compressible and therefore will not cause the coolant system to blow up. Check the fluid level and all of the coolant hoses and there connections. If it is not leaking from the TB or cross over pipe, maybe something else has come loose.

What was your original issue? You just started this thread off assuming your TPS was at fault without listing any problems. Could be another sensor that is at fault, like the ECT, MAP or IAT sensors.

If it runs better with it unplugged , then that would be a problem wouldn't it?

                    My day went as such

Drove 40 minutes to go get a different tps sensor
swapped the tps sensor along with the throttle body and nothing else
car now idles high , has an idle surge , and is pouring coolant from under the radiator.

my plan as of right now is to switch the throttle body back to the one that was in it so the car will at least work as it did before. even though they are both identical and doing so should have zero effect. and then just hope to squeeze all the air out of the cooling system.

Yes it would indicate that there is a problem. However, that doesn't mean that it is a problem with the TPS. The problem that you were having prior to you unplugging the TPS would have been more relevant for members to help you.

Sounds good! Let us know how you make out. If there are any further issues don't leave anything out. Bleeding the air out may stop the idle surge, but I highly doubt that it will stop the leak. Check the undersides of your hoses for coolant. You say that it is leaking under the rad. The coolant could be traveling on the underside of a hose from the engine to the rad. Just saying!

Oh and just putting this out there. The members time and information may be free on this forum. However, if you continue to dispute all the information and help that you are given. You may see a decline in the number of members willing to help. Along with the quality of help.

So I replaced the original throttle body while replacing the gasket which magically fixed the idle.

But the rad is still leaking from somewhere and i think it's one of the lower drain plugs or the lower hose. till then I have to rent a car for the next few weeks as I've run out of time to fix it.

So... You had a vacuum leak. They sell the drain plugs at part stores for like $5. The lower hose(if that's where it's actually leaking) are like $15, and the coolant is $12 for full strength house brand. I would think that's cheaper than renting a car, man.
