I gave up at least for this year. So I am taking everything away. I had to leave the plastic thing from the evaporator to connect the air blower to the vents.

the problem is that when I took the evaporator, I noticed it acted as a kind of filter because it was littered with leaves. Is there anything I can do to the evaporator plastic cage so it can stop things getting to the vents?

Just some sort of small holed stuff would work.

really anything will work. hardware stores sell lots of different kinds of mesh. stay away from steel unless you paint it, or it will rust. gutter guard mesh is small and is made of aluminum.

Is an air filter a good idea or it will affect the flow?

If you want to block the outside air vent under the wiper cowl then that will eliminate the leaves going to the blower then getting stuck to the evaporator core.
