Today my car started acting weird. i would drive around 40mph and all of a sudden the car kicked from 4th to second gear. then it would stay stuck in second. I drove the car a few miles and it felt fine, and got on the higway then it started switching between 3 and 4th gears all the time. when i got to work i tried looking for the codes but the D4 light would only stay on even when jumpered. Any ideas ? i think it might be the shift solenoids again, but i am not trowing a code. also when the shift lever is in any position the d4 stays on along with the position it is on.

I know that both my old car (86 accord) and my sisters (92 Civic LX) had a similar problem, where the car would not shift past 2nd gear untill warm and sometimes not at all. Was told by some mechanic that it was probabally the solenoids, then talked to my foreman and he reckoned it was that the clutch packs had died and jammed up the solenoids . . . . Will the D4 light not show any codes even when you short out the 2 pin connector?

yeah, it won't show any codes, but usually when i shorted it out the light would go off, now it's constanly on.Comment

also now i don't need to press the brake pedal with the ignition on to move the car out of park. i will just move by itself. i am stumped and i'd like all the help i can getComment

well i just took the atcu out and put it back and it works just fine. there are no codes, and the shift is toyota smooth.Comment
