if its auto, push the shifter harder into park, sometimes if it doesnt register, the key wont unlock. check to see if the P light is lit up during the times it wont come out.

dude this happened to me recently.. and dont move the steerting wheel around! my key got stuck..
what you need to do... is spray some lubricant into the key ignition.. i e WD40
and when you turn your key be more gently.. what is happeneing is your tumblers are getting stuck.. cuz they are old..and the fact that your key gets worn down every time you use it. ..
spray some lubcicant into the keyhole..and be more gentle when you turn your key...

i mean like shift locking it. to where it seems like its stuck or locked in place. i did that with my 1st car and when i pulled it down by force it shut off all of my gauges and radio. speedo didnt work nor did the lights. my mechanic said it was some type of anti-thieft device.
ill be sure to try that.Originally posted by TypeGa lubricant better suited for lock mechanisms is graphite lube. later.

I have the same problem on cold days. My P light will not come on and the key will not turn to the lock position, if I hold the brake pedal down for like 2 minutes it will light up and work properly. I have changed the gear position switch, shift lock solenoid, ignition switch and wiring, adjusted the shift cable and it still does it. I am thinking the TCU may be going out as I have been told one of the first symtoms of a failing TCU. Guess I will find out when it fails.

hey 93EX. you think the stuff he mensioned might be the problem. mine does the same thing. i experimented today and it doesnt come out only when the "P" light doesnt come on. once it came on(after i heard like a click sound) it worked right.

i had this same problem, i had 3 keys, my normal key on my keychain which got wore down, my spare key for my wallet and a key in my house... well i ended up taking out my spare and trying it instead of my main worn down key... and tada, no more sticking key. so if you dont have a spare, go get a new one made and try that. if none of the previous ideas have worked. and if it still doenst work then you may have a shitty key cylinder and you could get that replaced if all else fails.
