    Replacing battery without reseting everything

This seems like a silly question, but has anyone done this?

I need to change the battery on my new cb, but I don't have the radio code. The old battery has some juice, so all the accessories still have power, but the engine won't crank. So what I was thinking was...

With the old battery in, get the new battery close by. Run the batteries in parallel by connecting wires to both their posts, thus allowing me to add the new one and remove the old one without losing power to anything.

But does running batteries in parallel double the voltage? Or was that running in series...If I ran 24 volts though the car, it would likely pop the fuse, which, then would lose power to the accessories...

So I was wondering if anyone has replaced batteries like this to prevent your accessories from being reset?

on the stairs, she grabs my arm, says whats up,
where you been, is something wrong?
i try to just smile, and say everything’s fine.

As soon as you disconnect the dead batter terminals you might have about thirty seconds of power before you hook up the new battery. I could be wrong.

      What, held in capacitors?

      That could work also.

do it with the car running, and have some one keep their foot on the gas so it doesnt die i guess

edit: nevermind u said it wont start, what if u gave it a boost pack, started it, ran it, then switched em

What I would say. Why go through all that trouble just for a code when yo ucan just call the dealership.

I have done it so many times.. no problem so far.
Jump start the car with new battery.

                While engine is running..
                1. disconnect the negative terminal
                2. disconnect the postive terminal and wrap is with shop towel or something similar so that it does not touch the frame of the car
                3. remove the old battery
                4. install the new battery
                5. connect the postive terminal
                6. connect the negative terminal

                  How to not loose settings

All the above info is hazardous to your alternator and ECU.

The proper way is to either get the code from the dealer or use one of these:

                  One end goes in the cigarette lighter outlet;

And the other takes a 9 volt battery that is included in the kit.

You can get one at most auto stores.

                  Hope this helps.

Well, I hear all this info, but is running batteries in parallel dangerous?

I'll prob just see if I can get the code...watch them refuse to give it to me over the phone.

Off the top of my head I don't see why running them in parallel wouldn't work. I'll have a look into it.

Starting the car with a jump box, then disconnecting the battery, and connecting the new one isn't too bad for the older cars. Newer cars, mostly OBDII vehicles are the ones that tend to have a problem. I would just do it that way, but if not that settings keeper doesn't seem to be a bad idea either.

Well, turns out I didn't need to...well kinda

I got another battery, tried to jump it first, still no crank

OK, its not the battery, must be the starter

So I returned the battery and got a starter

First time installing one, so it took me a while. Got it installed, still no crank

                              god damnit

ok, so the starter works, what else? Helms says check the wiring, then check the ignition switch.

So I checked the fuses just to be sure, they're all good, and I'll check out that ign. switch tomorrow.

But during the starter install, I did disconnect the battery and I would enter the radio code, but the radio display doesn't work :slapsforehead:

So, for those with a honda radio, if I can't read the display, how would I enter the code? Just punch in the numbers as soon as I turn the car on?

on the stairs, she grabs my arm, says whats up,
where you been, is something wrong?
