    Leaky distributor help!

ok guys, I have a leaky distributor which is the main source of oil leak in my engine. I assume that I need to replace my distributor seal and just want to confirm the procedure in doing this. My thoughts would be to disconnect the negative battery cable, put 2 location markings on distributor ( for reassembly), remove dizzy , replace seal and reinstall while lining up the marks. Is this all which is needed?

then how come it says to do that in the Haynes manual book??? JW...but wierd, didn't know that the distributor could leak oil, or even anything. Guess i'll be on the look out for that in the future.

think about it... the camshaft is inside the head, fully surrounded in oil. the distributor is outside of the head, dry. somewhere between the two there needs to be an oil seal... theres an O-ring around the outside of the tip of the distributor. just about every CB7 ive worked on had a dried out dizzy o-ring, and is the #1 reason for oil being leaked down the side of the head and onto the top of the transmission.

haynes says to disconnect power before doing anything... as long as you dont have the key in and turned to on, doing the dizzy o-ring is so minor, its 3 bolts and its right there... if you electrocute yourself or short something out doing just that, thats pretty sad. lol

thanks Mike, my teacher at school always says to disconnect the damn negative wire so its burnt into my head. I figured my procedure was correct wanted to make sure I was missing something else. And you are so right about it dripping down unto the tranny. My car start right up all the time I doubt I'll need to replace the dizzy. i've been told when too much oil get on/in it I might need to change it.

the main o-ring keeps oil from leaking out between the dizzy and the head. theres also another smaller seal around the main rotating shaft, which allows it to turn but still keeps oil out of the dizzy itself. if this seal goes bad (not as common) youll start getting oil pooling inside of the dizzy housing itself. that can start killing the pickup coils/ignitor. i hear you can buy that seal from the dealer, but from what ive seen, most people just replace the whole dizzy instead of completely pulling it all apart.
