    H22 Valve Adjustment problems

alright, im in the middle of doing a valve lash adjustment on my h22a. .006" intake, .007" exhaust.

first off, all of the exhaust rockers adjust properly.

my problem is that on the intake side, the rockers are always in contact with the cam, no matter what. even if i adjust the screw ALL the way out, i still cant even get a .001" feeler between the intake cam and any of the intake rockers.

what can be the cause of this? running the engine around, all valves and rockers move properly, yet there is 0 play on any of hte intake rockers.

    i need help!!!

i wonder if its just that the rod that the intake rockers pivot on is dried out. the head HAS been sitting for a long time, completely dry... i pulled the rod out of the exhaust side and reoiled it upon installation. may be why i have no problems with the exhaust side.

i think im going to set all the valves to somewhere close to what they should be, and run the motor for a couple minutes, get oil pressure and oil everywhere, get things all loosened up and moving, then try it again...

cmon, no suggestions? the vtec rockers move freely, yet the main rockers do not - they work fine when turning the crank over, but will NOT budge by hand. so i am unable to fit a feeler gauge between the rocker and cam.

i cant imagine what could be causing this

Did you try tapping them with a mallet to see if they will move a little bit?

If they are moving with the engine, but not by hand, my guess would be like you said, that they are dry and you just don't have enough hand strength to move them.

Perhaps you should get an oil gun and try to oil them manually as best you can.

I don't really have any suggestions other than that, because you never took it apart, so it should be assembled correctly.

The only other thing I can think might be possible would be the cam being off. But I am sure you wouldn't have made that mistake, so again, my guess would be oil.

i soaked them in oil last night, and let them sit all day today while i was at work.

i can tap them to the point of the rocker bouncing off of the valve. so they DO move, but the problem is that they dont fall on their own! but even after i tap on them, they go right back to being stuck against the cam again.

im very confused, this doesnt seem physically possible lol.

and i do NOT want to have to take the intake cam back off, because i JUST finished putting the timing belt all together.

            ugh

Yes, but you will have to get oil actually up into the arms, which may not be easy.

My suggestion would be to unhook the coil, or ECU, and crank the engine a bit to see if they lossen up.

Yeah it seems bad, but unless you have some other way to prime them, I don't know what else to tell you.

The fact that they are moving at all indicates that they aren't bound up. So, you should be ok, priming the oiling system. If that doesn't work, then I would go from there. I will post when I get home to see if I can think of anything else though.

we are on the same page.

i still imagine it being an oil thing. they move, but perhaps the friction is just too great for moving em around by hand.

                my current plan of action:

pull off the top of the vtec solenoid, pour oil into it, and allow the rocker arm rods to fill with oil.

also, im going to pull the spark plugs and hook up power directly to the starter, and let the motor spin over nice and fast, and im going to keep spraying them down with pb blaster.

hopefully thatll encourage everything to loosen up.

I would think it would be ok.

You could also go around by hand a few revs too if you wanted. I know you have already done some, but you could do a few before you crank it if that makes you comfortable.

i can push the rocker arms down by hand, but they appear to have a very stiff, upward spring pressure.

not sure whats forcing the rocker arms to return upward, but normally when at rest, you can move them back and forth in its range of free motion very easily.

these spring right back up without hesitation.

well the car is sitting and i cant get to the crnak pulley to spin the motor, but yes, the ones i tried feel the same.

im goign to keep spraying it with pb blaster tonight, and tomorrow my dad had a pretty good idea - start the motor, and manually trip the vtec solenoid to get the two rocker pivot rods to pressurize with oil with it oiling itself and with all the rockers moving from the engine running, it may just lube everything and free everything up. then ill shut it back off and do a valve adjustment.

but the weird thing is, these suckers feel actually spring loaded... not dried out from lack of oil, but actually spring loaded.

Let me go have a poke around my spare head, and see if I can come up with anything.

I was going to ask you a question also.

You know those little o-rings, like the oil control orifice seal?

Why does Helm's say to replace those, but when I disassembled the heads, there was nothing there? Is that something that has to be replaced one the head is taken apart for the first time or what?

I didn't put any in there because there weren't any, and now I am wondering if that will cause premature wear...

The only other remote possibility I can come up with is that somehow, the VTEC pins are hanging up, causing the rockers to feel like they are "binding" on the lost motion assembly.
