No, the pegs are there, but look at the little groove around them. According to Helms and www.Hondaautomotiveparts.com, there are little O-rings that go there.

      Part #11

The other thing I was thinking, since that diagram is in play, is that you could try pressurizing the oiling system from the little service port on the front of the engine, over by the water neck.

It is accessed by removing part # 21.

the o-ring goes around the peg further down, you pulled the pegs out and they were gone? or were you looking at the groove you can see in the picture?

and thats a good idea, thank you. to be honest i always wondered why that seal bolt was there.

Were the rockers loose before you put the cams in? I think you better be safe and just pull the cam back out and look it over, its not that much work in the whole scheme of things.

The only other thing I can think of is the little tiny pin in the side of the rocker that sits in the pocket of the rocker next to it, but you said the vtec rocker moves fine so I doubt theres any issue there.

yes, the rockers were loose and were able to be moved no problem before i installed the cams and caps.

looks like i have my work cut out for me today.

Ahh so is that because they are from an H22A4?

no, its the same parts ive had in the head since last time.

this is because something else is broken that i didnt notice.

theres no way that the valves got longer, so for some reason the retainers are sitting higher. perhaps they arent seated properly with the locks... another possibility that im guessing is that because of the lack of oil, the retainer locks got worn down, allowing the retainers to sit higher

at this point i dont have any option besides tear it back apart

i was supposed to let my friend borrow my grey car so he could work on his car, but ive been putting it off because my own car has been down and out. so at this point, im getting PM's old sedan back on the road, and ill be driving that for a while.

i dont expect my coupe to be fixed anytime before the end of may, once im done with the suspension rebuild... i hope to have the head back together by that point.

I dunno if this will help ya but I had a cutaway head layin around so I threw in a stock valve, retainer, and rocker. valve seats are also stock so the valve is sitting in there exactly how a stock valve would (just for reference against your what you have, I realize your stuff isn't stock) Oh and thats a busted crower 3 cam in there, set to zero valve lash.

Notice there is plenty of rocker to retainer clearance with the stock setup, also take note of the amount the valve tip extends above the retainer. If the retainer is worn like you mentioned (doubtful), or the tip of the valve was machined down this distance will obviously become shorter. Keep in mind that your aftermarket retainers will be thicker than the stock one pictured so the visual relationships between the top of the valve and the valve tip might not "look" the same.

Also, if the head has had a valve job, i.e. seats were re-cut, then that would also affect the relationship between the rocker and retainer as the valve would be pushed further up into the head on the combustion chamber side. If this was the case, the height of the tip itself could be compensated for by machining it down, but the retainer position can NOT. It is controlled by the groove in the end of the valve.

I really don't think it would take alot of machining on that valve tip, combined with the thicker aftermarket retainer to cause you problems, even more so if a valve job was done at the same time. The distance from the top of the keeper groove to the end of the tip would be the first thing I would look at if you end up having to pull it apart that far. The second would be the distance from the spring seat to the tip of the valve, that will indicat the quality of the valve job if there was one.
