    Auto or Manual more reliable?

Which tranny will last longer? Looking for a new CB- I don't care if I drive one or the other, but isn't a MT more dependable over time than an AT.....aside from replacing the clutch that is.

Either one can be reliable depending on how they are maintained.

Our family seemed to have less problem with manuals. For a good automatic, you have to get it in decent condition (tranny wise) and keep it that way with regular fluid changes. Manual trannies are more forgiving, but then again you can ruin one if you don't know how to use it.

I agree. In general Honda's manuals are more reliable than their autos.

The autos are much more complicated mechanically (a lot more to go wrong), and often are neglected by previous owners.

Unfortunately, unless they have maintenance records to prove otherwise, you should assume it was neglected.

Also, the manual trannies typically get better MPG too.

          I completely agree.

I don't think it's a question of reliability between the two.

Obviously, since manual transmissions operate in a less complicated way than auto transmissions, there are smaller chances of things failing, if used properly, ofcourse.

considering the most likely part on a manual transmission to fail is the clutch, and most places wont repair a 16 year old auto transmissions (especialy sence it would cost more than the entire car) a manual is going to be your best bet. Clutches are "easy" to replace when compaired to its equvalent on a auto.

Then again I pound the shit outta my auto on a daily basis and she still loves me back.
I cant Slam further. The ground refuses to get any lower.

I agree...my 91 auto seems to run like its bullet proof.

I'd have to say manual is more reliable over time. Auto transmissions have more going on so there is a higher chance of failure.

                ...adjust accordingly

My auto was fine also, but I changed the fluid regularly too.

Hondas autos are not very forgiving of neglect.

Also, most of the Hondas still running with 300K+ that have not had tranny issues are 99% manual.

On abused cars, auto failures are very common. Manual failures are not.

The auto can be a perfectly reliable tranny, but the manuals are better.

I get what you mean, but my experience with manuel is well what everyone hates to here.....Grinding, I myself have never seen any auto do this? Also I was riding with a friend who manuel shifted his auto regulary but before he went into the next gear he let off the gas and then changed the gear and got back on it.He has been driving that car for 12 years now and its fine.I guess as long as you take care of your shit itl take care of you.

My auto tranny grinds in 3rd-4th gear, and also the car shudders back and forth very harshly when going into 3rd. So don't say they're bullet proof.
