Then why is it fine in every other gear? It's not like my TQ converter is only being used in 3rd, lol. Either way, I'm just hoping the stupid thing dies completely so I have an excuse to swap in a 5spd.

Dont know which one is actually more reliable myself, but atleast a manual helps keep you alert on the road... Sadly though I drive an auto...

How can people say a manual transmission is more reliable than a auto? Think about it, from the time the car rolls off the lot until the time the auto tranny dies, you dont do anything to it besides fluid flushes. Manual transmissions on the other hand have lots of parts that require service at regular intervals. Plus they have parts that can wear out (synchro's, etc) before the transmission actually needs to be rebuilt or replaced. Auto's on the other hand you drive until they blow up then you replace. And when it does blow up they are dirt cheap to replace because no one wants a auto tranny. Just pick up one from someone who did a auto to manual conversion and I bet you'll pretty much get it for free. Plus older Honda automatic transmissions are pretty much bombproof when taken care of properly. I know of a one owner 90' accord with 325K thats a auto and shifts like butter still. No work needed at all but they were always on time for the 30K flush. Take care of your cars and they will take care of you.

People like to say manuals less hassle because most of the parts are mechanical hence the manual part. Gears/synchros/clutch all that stuff its all mechanical and operated by a foot (other than the hydraulic part from pedal to slave). Also I have seen some clutches last 200k or so depending on driver. The most you have to change is a clutch/trans fluid and such which is not that bad. AN auto however is what it implies it does it for you so there is going to be more stuff in it. Its a pretty decently setup hydraulics system but eventualyl springs for check balls/clutches wear out also but not as bad as long as you treat it nicely as mentioned. Some good autos that are basically bulleproof are trans like the th400/th350. But as I said either one can last as long as its maintained but who does that? Unless its one of those uptight owners which is rare too find. Most of the cars you find used nowadays arent really maintained why? Because its an old car they use it till its life ends sell it buy another. Anyway I had a 90 auto ex. Lasted me about 210k or so before she got totaled however the engine/trans were still healthy.

This statement is false. Other than fluid changes, Honda manuals really require no maintenance. I can also tell you from experience that even if both cars are driven exactly the same, the manual WILL last longer.

Doesn't matter if it is a granny or a teenager.

False? Please explain what is false about it. If you are trying to tell me a manual transmission with the stock clutch is going to outlast a auto tranny you need to put the crack pipe down. You are going to have to replace the clutch/pilot bearing/throw-out bearing ATLEAST once in the transmissions lifetime (most likely 2 or 3 times though before the tranny dies though really). So the manual transmission will need to be at the very least serviced for those things once in its life, which is about a 500$ job. The auto on the other hand will require no maintence like that at all, all it will ever need until it dies is fluid flushes. And to say a manual will only need a clutch once in its lifetime is very conservative, your really looking at 2-3 times or more before it goes.

So please explain how a transmission that will require anywhere from 500-1500$ in repairs before it actually needs to be replaced could be considered more reliable than a transmission that will require absolutely nothing before it dies?

Because it's not the transmission you're replacing or fixing, lol. If you want to get into clutches and what not, what about replacing a bad torque converter?

when 5spd trannies start to break, gears grind, but usually still work.

when auto trannies start to break, they start shifting hard, and ultimately stop shifting.

ill always trust a 5spd over an auto, plus its more fun to drive too. but then again ive had an auto die on me, and a couple of them start shifting really bad. never had issues with any manuals besides grinding gears.
