    Honda dealership

Well guys looks like my car will be sold soon, one of the people that are looking at the car want it to get it checked out at a honda dealership. I was just wondering what are some of the normal things the dealership will put down for things needing replacing such as bushings, belts ect. I just hope the dealership doesn't rape me for parts

I'm kind of worried its going to be a long list and that the people are going to be like uhhh I don't want it anymore

honestly, it will probably be a good size list. they love trying to upsell on older cars.

all u hafta do is, if your car is nearing an oil change. just bring it to the express service and they do a 19 point inspection for free so you know what your up against.
kill two birds with one stone kinda deal.

Yeah, that's probably a pretty bad place to have it inspected. I realize it's not your choice but you do have to approach this a certain way now. Take it to the dealership and have it inspected. Take their list and go over the problems yourself just to double check which areas actually need improvement. If you feel you need to make any of those changes then do so or modify the price accordingly. Don't reduce your price because the dealership gave you a laundry list. I'm sure if any member on this board went to a dealership to have service done then there would be a long list of stuff that supposedly needed to be done.

Well I guess you dont really have a choice of where they bring it and I think the dealership will probably find a laundry list of things that do and do not need repairing

well, actually, dealerships do not rape you. I happen to be a honda technician and yes, we upsell the shit out of any cars from new to old. not because we are trying to rape anyone, but to let you guys know what exactly your car needs. also, this is how we make our money. trust me, the worst thing that I hate is when you spend so much time inspecting the car and the guest/customer says "I'll have my mechanic do it!" or when the vehicle has been through 10 diffeerent shops and 5 different uncles and 2 son in laws and their daughter's boyfriend, and the car still isn't fixed yet. then we find the problem and the guest/customer says "I'll have my mechanic do it!"

but to answer your question, the dealership will charge good amount of hours labor especially for suspension or bushings. as for timing belts and such, every dealer should have their own coupon prices which I think is pretty reasonable. any more questions??

My quote from a 40 point inspection below

                  Rt Axle Seal Leaking
                  Rt frt axle internal failure
                  Valve cover gasket leaking
                  Distributor Shaft Seal Leaking
                  Rt Mirror Damaged
                  Air Filter Dirty
                  quote: $1200 - $1500 +tax and s/s

                    ^^
rt. axle seal and axle=2.0 hours labor
valve cover gasket replacement and valve adj.=1.0 labor
                    distr. o ring=1.0 labor
                    rt. mirror=1.0 labor
                    air filter=no charge
all these labors are depending on that shop rate. In example 90 dollars per hour. you do the math.
don't forget to add parts to the total amount of labor.
damn, if my boss sees this, I'm fired.

The dealer is going to try to find so much stuff wrong with your car especially because of it's age.

if they decline the car over a list like doylna posted above (which you probably will be getting) then they are stupid... its 15 years old lol, of course its not going to be in tiptop shape, especially if inspected at the dealership which usually does brand new, late model cars... while many shops would be like "its leaking a bit of oil but its running strong" i have a feeling the dealership would be like "its leaking from here, here, here, here, here, here, here and its going to cost $1000 to fix"

we are just trying to cover our ass. If we don't recommend something that is leaking, it can come back on us and we have to fix it for free. that is why we give such a list, but it has to be leaking though. or broken etc. you can always request to see what is recommended, or what is leaking. remember, this is how we make our money. just imagine a plumber coming over to your house to fix a simple problem. I bet you it's gonna cost at least 300 bucks, and this is just a simple unclogg. imagine the plumber fixing a pipe or something major. how much that would cost?! am I trying to defend the dealership, maybe, cause I am from that side of the wall. however, there are techs out there that will recommend what isn't needed. not me, I can't fix a problem if it isn't broke.

The reason why shop rates at dealerships is so high is because:
                            1. The technician needs to be paid
                            2. Service writers need to be paid
                            3. Other people in the "team" need to be paid.
                            4. There is more to it I just cant think right now.

If dealerships paid employees at a fixed rate at which they sold cars they would most likely be goin out of business.

ROFL! true story! 90 is on the cheaper side for dealer rates...lol

i threw these in based off our "retail" listings... i just actually rounded down/generalized the prices since it varies. these are probably quite a bit cheaper...

                              rt axle seal=$10 +/-
                              rt axle=$300 +/-
                              valve cover gask/grommets/rocker o-rings= $45 +/-
                              distributor o-rng=$1.50 +/-
rt mirror=$240 +/- (unless u need just a motor or glass)
                              air filter= $25 +/-

thats $621.50 in parts...not including tax.
5 hours serv. labor @$90/hr= $450... no tax included

                              1071.50.......

                              wow that adds up fast.....
