If the freon is low the ac won't kick in. This is so that the compressor doesn't get damaged.

Sorry to bring up such an old thread...but I was searching for an a/c/idle cure and I ran across this.Originally posted by ACCORDianateAcutally it was taken Feb 14th 2004 in McKinney, TX in an elementary school parking lot. We got about 4" (which as you know is a lot for N Central TX). The bug deflector is in storage, the grille is now black, the 2" blue driving lights are now 3" clear driving lights, and an extra set of OEM headlights are currently undergoing a DIY blackout treatment. A second set of OEM corners from eBay should be arriving soon for their own DIY blackout (providing they don't look like crap when done).
You got it. We 'removed' the old R12, and used an old refrigerator pump to get a half pound of vacuum, drew in 2oz oil, added 1 can of some 'high mileage' R134, and a can of the WalMart R134. We borrowed some Matco gauges and all it takes is an adaptor to convert the 134 tip to the 12 tip. The drawback to doing this is the compressor is noisy, but it produces cold, cold AC without having to do the conversion. Doing this procedure is at your own risk.
You say you did all this "without" doing the conversion....but in reality, you DID do the conversion. You completely contradict yourself.
Anywhos...sorry..just wanted to point that out.

Seems the same for me. As soon as the clouds come or sun goes down a bit, its freezing. But when it's high noon, with no clouds and hotter than hell outside, I have to keep the thing on high just to be able to stay comfortable.

Well part of my problem is my radiator fan isn't working. I noticed its gets much colder if I'm driving fast. Maybe after I fix that *again* (This would be the 3rd time) it might work better. Other than that, the only thing I can think of is trying to add a bit more refrigerant and monitoring the pressures again... hope I can still borrow my dad's gauges.
I wonder how well these aftermarket "parallel flow" condensors work? Like an aluminum radiator... maybe that might help.
