    Rust Prevention : 101

Living in the Northeastern part of the country has a
very large effect on how your car looks. Predominately because we are
so prone to Rust. The reason for this is very simple...alot of humidity
and also because of the winter snow salt.

Over the years i have tried to keep my car in the best shape possible.
Which includes not trying to get it scratched, and not getting any dents.
Those are things you can try and control, but what about the things
    that you CAN'T control....like RUST.
That is why i have started this thread. I want the very few CB7's out
there without any rust to keep that posture going...

I started today by taking off the rubber stripping on the rear wheel well.
People say that water, and moisture gets trapped in there and thus
    forming rust over the years.

Then i sort of added like two layers of Roof Coating to the underside
of the wheel well. By doing this im hoping that it will form a thick protective
layer over the wheel well trim, sort of where the rubber stripping use to go.

This is only my first step in ensuring that my CB7 can live a rust-free life.
Later on in the week i will buy more rust preventing products, which i will
    post on here.

I will also post the name of the Roof Coating i used and the procedure
    on how to do it.

If you guys have any ideas on how to prevent Rust for us Rust-Free CB7's,
    please post them here...

see i so disagree with removing that rubber strip dont do it...heres what i did with my civic....i went out and bought rubber undercoat and also 2 cans of rhyno lyning....and i jacked up the car took rear bumper, and both rear wheels off and siliconed both of the rubber strips in place so now NO water or grime can get in there at all....those are needed becuase without them sand.....rocks and shit spit up at you wheel wells and chip the paint....when that happens rust forms....so you need those strips.....than i cleaned each wheel well really well and sprayed 3 coats of rubber undercoating everywere under there and i also removed the rear bumper and did all under there....than after those 3 coats dried i sprayed 5 coats of ryno lyning under each wheel well and were the rear bumper go's.......its been months with no problems i will never ever get rust this way......and its was worth it...but trust me you want that rubber strip on each side or the, rocks, dirt will eat away at the paint and it'll rust anyway....i have been through 2 cb7's and both i sold do to rust i bought a 100% rust free civic and took all these precautions......i know i will always be rust free....

so no those strips were not a mistake by honda. its a drainage problem theres no drain holes in the rust area so water sits there not becuase of the rubber becuase theres no drainage. and also before i put both strips back on i allso ryno lined under each strip and than siliconed it on. i have about a half inch of protective coating everywere.

        labor=free (i did it)

        clear silicone = $5.50 (1 tube)

can of ryno lining = $15.00 each (2 cans) ($6 at walmart per can)

can of undercoat = $5 each (1 can)

        no rust = priceless......

All you have to do is spray oil in all the seams. As long as there's oil on top of the metal you're fine. That's what the body guy told me to do. Just pull back the plastic liner in the wheel well and spray oil in there. Also run oil along the inner wheel well lip and take off the sideskirt and rubber circle and spray in there.

For the record he used to be the body guy for Honda and he didn't put the strips back. All the strips do is protect the lip from getting paint chips.

I have rust proofing, undercoating, and sealant in my wheel wells now. My bodyguy said I'd sell the car before I see rust again.

^^I was kinda skeptical in removing those strips. I dont my wheel well
to be exposed to dirt and rocks like that. But i had to do sumthing.
They were already coming off...but imma try your idea and sealing it
very good. Imma get them from Honda tomorrow.
I will get more supplies during the week also...

Is there a way a Bodyguy can diagnose the wheel wells to see
if one is developing rust, or will soon develope rust?
I want to go for a free consoltation, i want to know if thats possible...

Pop your bumper and take a look around when they're off. I had a lot of rust I couldn't seen on the good side. Also, pull off the inner trunk panels and look in there, you might be able to see that seam at least some of it. I could see the previous bondo job bubbling up from that angle.

                *EDIT*

See what I'm talking about...none of this rust was visible with the bumper on.

                *EDIT 2*

This is the same side with the panel removed...check out how much junk there is in there. But see how that would be visible from the inner trunk?

yea i have tried the oil trick with my old accord doesnt last long...just do what i said and you'll be fine.....when i had my accord i even tok my inner trunk panels off and poured oil in there didnt work....just do the steps i did and you wont get rust.....you dont have to keep the lips but i recomend it.....some body shops say keep it some dont...i say keep it. just silocne it on and not a thing can get under it simple as that....i would not bother with the oil trick becuase the oil doesnt last long and you have to do it every so often...just ryno line like i did. works wonders.

But you already had rust...once you have rust, you can't stop it. The oil isn't a bad idea to prolong it, especially after you coat everything with different products. I had my rust down to a crawl before I went away to school...you just have to basically wash your car weekly and spray everything out

yea im not talking about haulting rust,im talking about preventing....if u already have rust you have to get rid of it ALL and than do my procedure.....even if you cover up rust with TAR itll still rust....my way is if u have no rust and want to keep it from rusting forever.....if u already have rust get rid of it and than do what i said....if you have rot than have metal welded in than seal it and than do what i said.....if its surface rust than buy a can of rust converter and that will turn rust to black primer and than do what i said.......i have tried many ways and this is by far the very best.....and yes especially in winter months wash your car as much as u can esp in the wheel wells to get the salt and shit out....but i could drive my car all winter and not wash it once and i wont get a spec of rust i have to much of a defense built up that the salt, rocks, sand, weather period cant penetrate....when i say i ryno lined everything i mean it...... the rear body panel (panel under bumper) rear wheel wells.....entire underbody of car. and the ryno liner dried to rock hard so rocks cant chip it at all......its bed liner sao its tought stuff. and remember under my 5 coats of ryno liner i have 3 coats of rubber undercoat.....under that is stock honda undercoat.....so im set. hope this helps.

Has anyone tried using Fluid Film the way its mentioned on the http://www.acuravigorclub.com/ site? I was wondering how this would work on the rear inner wheel lip before putting on the rubber trim.

I have new rubber trim and have changed them out every few years. I noted on the website: http://www.eurekafluidfilm.com/appli...utomotive.html that this product will not harm paint, but may cause swelling of 100% rubber to occur. So I was wondering if that in fact would make those trim strips bulge out after application. On things like battery terminals, lock cyclinders, etc. the product sounds like it would work well.

One other place i have noticed rust forming is
at the Driver side door handle. Very minemal, but the
handle has like a rubber lining that if that comes off, then
you are going to be prone to rust. I think im getting a little
bit there, but you cant really see it unless you get super close.
