no you are supposed to empty the r12 so the r 134 can go in.

        r12 is illegal nowadays

R12 is not really illegal. Just is only for use by licensed technicians.

I had mine recharged with R12 not long ago. Hmmm, I need to find the receipt.

Its not that bad to convert to 134a.
I think Pepboys has the fittings for like 8 bucks or so.
Then you can buy the recharging kit.

I would first go to a shop and have it vacuumed.

When i was taking off the A/c system in my parts car i thought it had no freon but it turns out that it had alot.
I took off one of the lines and freon started going everywhere.

It got my arm but i was able to wash it right away.
So yeah, if you dont vacuum it and try to do it yourself its dangerous and harmful to the environment, u can get in serious trouble if caught.

R12 is not illegal, nor is it illegal to buy. HOWEVER, you usually have to either sign or make the claim that you are only purchasing it to resell to a licensed A/C shop.

I've been having problems with my R-134 converted system getting cold in this 95 degree weather. Are you running the OEM compressor, condenser, and fans? I'm gonna take it by the shop soon and check the system for leaks.
