Who here has had/rode on cut springs.

WHo here has cut their springs on their cars? What car?how did it affect the ride? How many coils? Top or bottom, Was there a specific way to cut them?

Yeah I am thinking about cutting the springs on my cb7. Only 1 coil each maybe 2, so it shouldnt affect it by that much. Spare me the "dont do it, save up and do it right".

The CRX my friend and I bought had cut springs on stock shocks. He had it lowered about 2.5" and had cut the top coils off. As far as I remember, the coils looked to be regular throughout the whole length of the spring, so I'd assume that the springs had a linear spring rate.

The problems we had regarding the springs were mainly due to the fact that the car was so low. We couldn't approach most driveway aprons without scrubbing the mud flaps, and 90 degree corners above 15 mph would cause the tires to scrub the upper parts of the tirewell.

With that said, the car is still dropped about 2.5", but riding 450/650 lbs/in coilovers. There is no rubbing of any kind.

It shows that if you cut a fair amount of spring travel out without increasing the spring rate to compensate, you WILL rub. The old springs were so soft that, combined with 2.5" of travel removed, the car had no useful spring travel remaining.

EDIT: A side note of no particular importance was that the shocks weren't blown.

I have ridden in a car like that.

It consistently bottomed out, since the springs are progressive in nature. It would have the same force as a normal spring acting down, but when the car would then move up, it would overextend the strut essentially and cause the car to rebound higher than it was designed to do. Then the car would just come back down on the spring with that much more force.

It's all physics...the whole 1/2 kx^2 thing. It will blow your struts.

i rode in a cb7 with cut springs. it was better than i expected. still i wouldnt do it. springs arent that expensive and neither are some cheap stock replacement shocks like gr2s. if you cant afford 300 bucks to lower the car then dont do it. if you lose control and hit someone or something its going to cost you a hell of a lot more than 300 bucks. if you survive

Its a different bouncy from stiff suspension. Car handles like crap. Dont do it. my friend did it in his civic. I hated it.
