    I hate printers!

I swear... I can build a computer from spare parts. Most of my computer equipment is budget crap I bought on sale, stuff I stole from friends, or parts that I cannibalized from old computers. My printers, however, have always been purchased brand new. They always work fine until the ink runs out (and I swear they package the printers with 1/3 full cartridges!)
Whenever I replace the ink, I can never get them to print properly again. I do all the calibrating, test pages, etc... and it never seems to work. When my printers run out of ink, I'm always better off buying a new printer (which would explain why I have 6 of them in my basement!)
I always seem to end up with lexmark... the one with the highest ink cost.

    1. Printers do come with starter cartridges. All of them.
    2. Buy HP, but don't get the super cheap ones. I have an HP L7680. It's older, but still works fine. The news models look similar but with different colors. I think they jsut switched from the 8500 to the 8600. I'm not sure if they quality stayed through the jump. I'd look around online and in the store. Office depot will sometimes off a $50 credit towards a new printer if you bring in your old one. At least, that's what they were doing when I quit.

Have you tried getting the original cartridges refilled? Lots of places do that, but I think only with certain brand cartridges.

However, this gives you the opportunity to go "office space" on a printer, with some regularity...not all bad.

I hate Lexmark printers with a passion. When my mom bought my younger brother his first PC, we got a Lexmark. The sad thing is we also had the same model lexmark printer already in our closet from when my older brother bought a computer. Anyhow, it always seem that the price of an ink cartridge is the same price as a new printer... so why not?

I bought an HP printer when i started school in March of 2010, even though i didn't print very much, the ink ran out in it. My new Canon all in one printer, copy, fax and scanner, was only a few bucks more than the ink cartridge for the HP printer at Walmart. I ended up trading the HP printer for a lawn mowing.

I never tried it with my own cartridges, but I did it with my mom's... and it failed miserably. $25 to refill her black and color cartridges, and they never worked properly.

The problem with refilling a lot of cartridges is that if the PC board on the cartridge detects low-ink it will always give you a low-ink message, even if you fill them back up. These companies are doing everything in their power to ensure that you come back to them to buy their over priced cartridges. My printer is a 7-year old Dell 1700n B&W laser. It works amazingly. I've upgraded the RAM in it to 128MB (max supported) and replaced the toner cartridge with high-capacity ones bought on eBay and NEVER has it given me problems. I've got it running as a network attached printer and I could not be happier with it. For color I just go to school.

Yeah, they get you to buy the printer for $50, and sell you ink for $80. I don't mind paying for the ink, if it would only work properly! I waste half my ink on improperly printed stuff!

Jarrett, I may have to look into picking up one of those. I don't print very much, and 90% of what I do print is B&W anyway. How much do the eBay toner cartridges cost you? I normally despise Dell (most of the computers I've fixed in my lifetime have been Dells...) though their peripherals seem to be much better than their actual computers. I've been running a Dell monitor that I stole from my drummer for the past 4 years. Works great.

I used to work in Office Depot back 7yrs ago, and their sales push with printers was to sell cartridges, and the usb printer cable. Thats where the companies made their money...and this is no BS. We got incentives for printer sales.

...oh and I almost forgot...the f'in warranties that you NEVER use, because like you, people end up buying new printers 2 yrs later.

Exactly. Warranties are crap. Hell, when you go through the hassle to have a warranty honored, you still end up getting an outdated machine back!

Those cables are crap. $35 for a cable that you can buy for $6 online.

I found a few of the printers Jarrett mentioned for pretty cheap on eBay. I might look into that. Maybe I'll have better luck with frickin lasers!

The laser has my vote. Mine used to be my dad's that he bought new. I've only had to replace the toner twice since we've owned it but I use 6000-page toner cartridges. I don't think I've ever paid over $45 for one. It is a heavy bastard but I don't exactly need to fit it in my laptop bag.

                            Not sure about Dell.

I use to swear by HP, but they went downhill fast.

sometimes i wished i bought a wireless printer. With this new desk i'm using, it doesn't have a hutch ontop where i used to keep my printer. So now every time i need to use it, I have to carry the printer across the room and hook up the cables.
