    USPS mail question/opinion..

I know no one here is probably a mail man/woman but lets just say that you keep getting mail at your address for someone that does not live there. After years of writing return to sender or "does not live here", do you think that I personally could get into trouble if i started writing "deceased" on the mail?

This is the case at my house currently. I havent talked to my father in almost over a decade. The rat bastard must have recently bought a new toyota truck as the dealer keeps sending recall notices and other crap to our house. Ive recently seen mail that sort of resembles collection noticesbut it doesnt actually state that. Now his name is still on the home loan with my mothers because he wont relinquish any rights although he alao has not contributed to the mortgage since the early 90s, my mother has been making the payments ever since.

Anyhow i just want his mail to stop coming here, do you think id get in trouble for writing deceased on his mail that is sent here? Im sure its going to cause a huge headache for someone.

Tampering with mail is a federal offense... I'll just stop there.

Exactly. Or you could go to the post office and tell them to stop sending his mail there.

I've done that before. It'll stop coming for a while but then it returns after a few months.

well i just looked up the definitive answer to "tampering with mail" and it also covers "interference of its delivery"; well crap. I'll go back to the Post Office with a nice stack of it. Hell i'm not even allowed to throw it away when it comes.

You could fill out a change of address form with his name on it and have them send his mail somewhere else. Its illegal aswell. I dont know how anyone could point the finger at you for it. Just an idea.

If they are collection notices and his name is on the home expect a lien at some point.

Leung, I know exactly what you're dealing with.

I get shit addressed to my brother (who hasn't lived here for over four years now) all the time. Final notices, bills, etc., address to him at this address.
I've wrote 'Return To Sender', 'Refused', 'Does Not Live Here Anymore', you name it, it keeps coming back.
Final straw was the repo guy at my front door asking me where the truck was or he was going to call the sheriff (I don't own a damn truck... )

Long story short, had to force him to fill out a change of address form and spoke with my mail carrier to have her flag everything with his name on it that comes here. It's helped a HELL of a lot, but stuff still comes through.

Good luck, I feel your pain.

I'm in the same sort of boat. My landlord has lived in this house since 2008.

Of the previous owners, the husband passed away in 2007, and the wife resides in a seniors complex 5 hours away.

Every day, we get mail for both of them. The husband has been dead for 5 damn years!

We've talked to the mail carrier personally and told them. They just said "if it's addressed here, I have to deliver it. If it's not correct, or you don't want it, put a red X on it and I'll pick it up."

So we did the red X thing. After about a week, the mailbox was overflowing with their marked mail, and the mail carrier never took it.

Now we're just like screw it. The mail carrier won't do anything about it, so we just throw their mail in the garbage.
