15% If they are good, 20% if they are awsome. One time I was at Olive Garden and the waiter took over an hour to bring out my food! And was just an idiot and messed up the order...He got nothing but I was outa town soo i dont have to worry about goin back.

umm....if you tip only 5 bucks on like a 30-40 dollar meal or more then thats a horrible tip...

referring to the comment to when ur out with your family, you only tip 5 as a max for good service.

the food industry is a hard one to work in and esp. being a waiter theres a lot of stress and it takes up a lot of time and you also need to memerize a lot of different items on the menu. hence, i tend to tip more then a little, because its not easy being a waiter or a waitress.

Right. $5 on a $40 check will tempt your waiter to make a voodoo doll out of dinner rolls and poke it repeatedly with toothpicks in painful places!

I just got home from an 11 hour day... made $120... not too bad, considering how slow it was. My worst tip tonight was $10 on an $89 check... and they had a 20% discount!

no offence AT ALL deev, but i mean... you dont make the food, do you? What if the person orders like lobster or something?? or an expensive plate...?

excellent service = 5 or six bucks

family orders cheese burgers or salads

                excellent service = 5 or 6 bucks...

am i wrong in thinking this??

I guess I would call myself a pretty generous tipper, I never tip under 15% and usually tip well for good service..

                    Yeah, actually...

At my restaurant, burgers are $7. Sodas are $2. So each person has a $9 bill... 4 people makes it $36. $5 on that is pretty weak... I would expect $7.

I had 22 tables today. If I got $2 less than I should have on every table, I would have made less than $100, for an 11 hour day. After tipping the hosts and bussers, it wouldn't have been worth my time.

Tipping should be AT LEAST 15%. If you get lobster and other expensive stuff, that means I am also paying more for you to eat there. I pay 3% of your total check amount to the hosts, regardless of what you leave me. If you give me $5 for excelent service on a $100 check, you really just gave me $2. Waiters are NOT pizza delivery drivers.

Basically, being a waiter consists of far more than writing down orders, going to the computer, and bringing the food out. Yes, that's the core of it, but we also manage to do that for 6 tables of 2-10 people at a time. We are constantly making sure you have a full drink. We are CONSTANTLY catering to your every whim... If you ask for it, and it's within our power to do it, we do it. We have to rely on the kitchen to cook the food properly (when they are cooking for dozens of other tables at the same time...) We rely on the busy bar to make drinks... all that comes down on us. If the kitchen does something wrong, the waiter gets blamed, and the tip suffers (while the cook still makes $15 an hour...) We do everything in the most timely fashion possible, and often for VERY low tips because people either don't know how to tip, or they seem to be oblivious to the fact that they are NOT the only people that server is taking care of!

Go to a restaurant and ask them what the minimum gratuity is for large parties... THAT is what the general accepted minimum tip is in that particular establishment... usually 15%.

Now $3 for a delivery guy is decent! I did that before I went to waiting. $1 and $2 tips were common, and crappy. $3 was good, and I would actually make the effort to get there in a timely fashion if I knew I was getting $3 (not so for less...) For $4 and $5, I would violate any traffic laws I could to get there on time. I would make other lower tippers wait, even if they called first! I always took care of my $3-$5 tippers.

Its a really shitty system we have in place. I wish tipping wasn't such a requirement, they should just increase the pay to a point where a tip shouldn't be required but rather a bonus.

I used to be an asshole about tipping, my thought was you are already paid to serve me so the amount I give you... if any is based on how well you do. Since then I've changed significantly, especially when I'm out with my gf. Now I generally do 15% minimum (unless its super shitty) and I give large tips for what I deem excellent service. Getting a 30-40% tip out of me (if the meal is reasonably priced) is not too extreme if you do a great job.

But yeah, I don't envy the waiter life.

I make pretty good money at my job, and waiters don't get that much per hour so if they are good, then I leave a good tip. This guy Andy at the Applebees here in Ohio.. I would usually order a few rounds of beers and sometimes boneless chicken wings; the bill was normally around $10-$15 and I would give him a $5 tip. I took the parents out to dinner the other night and the bill was $130 and I left a $19 tip because I had a lot of 1's and a few $5's.. now if they don't do a good job or anything then I don't leave much at all.

It all depends on the waiter/waitress.. but I would want people to leave me a good tip if I were one, which I probably will be here in a few months.

If I go out to a restaurant and I the server is obviously not interested in taking care of me, the tip will suffer. Even though I'm big on proper tipping, I agree that it depends on the server actually doing their job!

This girl that served us at Don Pablo's the other night is a good example of this... She had MAYBE 2 other tables going on from what we could see. We were sat, and 10 minutes later she comes around and takes our drink order. 10 more minutes and we actually get said drinks. Now, 20 minutes without drinks (and no explanation) is pretty bad! Especially with waters and sodas (and one margarita, which could have come AFTER the waters and sodas). Once she dropped the drinks off, she walked away. 5 minutes passed before she came back to take our meal orders. We ordered the food, drained our drinks, and someone else delivered the food. We were halfway through the meal before she came back and we were able to ask for refills... She walked past us twice after that without the drinks. THEN we got refills. Then we sat... and sat... and sat. Some other server took some of our plates away. Finally she showed up and asked if we were done (duh! 2 out of 4 plates aren't even there!). Then we finally get the check. We told the guy that sat us that two of us were servers. Apparently she wasn't told, or didn't care. You ALWAYS take care of other servers! They're most critical, and will tip VERY well if you do no more that TRY to do everything right! "hey guys, sorry the drinks took so long. the bar was backed up"... fine, I'll accept that, even if it really means "sorry, I forgot to ring in your drinks for 5 minutes!".
Anway, that girl got something like $7 on a $45 check, and from me and my girl, that was REALLY bad!

im currently a part time waiter and i feel that the least i would leave is 10%. i would leave less if the waiter/waiteress isn't doing much for me or forgets alot of things i asked for. If they do good and refill my drinks and ask me once, or maybe twice if everyting is ok during the meal. If they are constantly looking at me every 2mins or so they will get less than 20%. If they do everything correctly and seem like they are enjoying what they are doing they will get more than 20%

Since i have been waiting tho, many ppl have different opinions on how to tip. If your a good waiter you will observer ur customers and how they act as you speak to them. Everybody is different on how they want to be waited on, the waiter should be able to pick up on how ppl act when they first greet them to understand how to work with the ppl to benefit thereself in the end.

The thing i hate most about ppl that alot don't understand is that sometimes when ppl's food is wrong its not always the waiters fault and they then give the waiter a shitty tip for somthing they didn't neccessaryly do. And if a waiter does make a mistake and admits its, it would not effect my tip towards them, bc alot will just make up some bs as to why they forgot somthing.
