The worst thing is that we can lose our jobs for saying anything about tipping. Unless someone asks, we're not allowed to educate them! I do my best to talk loudly about the acceptable percentages when I'm within earshot of tables that seem like they may not tip well... but then again, I'm assuming they know how to calculate percentages!

Then don't go out to eat, Ken!
Quite honestly, 10% is a slap in the face. Would you flip the pizza guy a shiny new nickel for his time? Tell a cabbie "thanks for the ride, bud!" and be satisfied with that?
Tips are ALL WE GET. I haven't seen a paycheck with money in it for years. What I make in tips (minus about 1/6 of it for the hosts) when I walk out at night is all I have to pay my bills.
I got $5 on $57 tonight. If I ever see those people again, they're getting an extra helping of boogers to go with their floor seasoning...

15-20% depending on the quality of service, and it is RARE that i give anyone less than 18% -- likewise, i will always leave at least $5 if the check is less than $25
i am fortunate enough that in california, we are required to receive the same STATE minimum wage as everyone else, $6.75 -- so much better than the $2.83 i used to make -- but that doesn't help the fact that i make 8 - 11% on a daily basis... that's an insult; there is a point to which i say "well at least they were happy, so i know i did my best..." but to what point can i justify $5 on $80 and WORSE!!!
and if you can't afford to tip, then don't eat out -- or have a soda instead of a round of drinks, or get fast food where you DONT have to pay for your service... ... don't be ignorant!!!!
breathing is deadly underwater...
