ANY BUYING/SELLING IN THIS FORUM WILL RESULT IN AN INSTANT BAN!

Read the rules: http://www.cb7tuner.com/vbb/showthread.php?t=43956

Myself, and the other mods have been very nice and lenient with the rules. We have been deleting threads, and giving out warnings. Some members didn't get the clue and re-posted over and over... Now ANY member buying or selling in this section will be banned... No IF's AND's or BUT's.

Beginner Forum Rules - EVERYBODY read! (old and new members alike!)

Beginners start here. Once you have 30 worthwhile posts (off topic doesn't count) you may post outside of the Beginner forums. Any "whoring" (posting simply to raise your post count) will return your count to 0, or result in a ban.

These are the rules. Read them. Live by them.

1) Absolutely NO flaming! "Flaming" is an outright attack on a member. ALL questions are encouraged to be asked here, no matter how basic. Members with over 30 posts will be subject to a ONE WEEK ban if caught flaming in this forum (and yes, moderators can read deleted posts). Members with under 30 posts will be subject to a ONE DAY ban.

2) Use appropriate language. Racial or sexual slurs will not be tolerated. A ban will be issued at the discretion of the cb7tuner.com staff.

3) No items may be sold in the Beginner forums. Any "for sale" threads will be deleted.

4) Temporarily banned members will be PERMANTLY banned if they are found posting on another account.

The rules can and will be added to. Any updates will be marked in the title.

The rules for the overall forum can be found here:

    The Rust Thread

who likes rust? not me. i live in the south, so rust isn't a big problem, but it does happen few and far between, however, people from more northern areas know all to well about rust. i made this compilation to possibly help other's better understand the rust and what it takes to get rid of it.

    what is it?
Rust is the substance formed when iron compounds corrode in the presence of oxygen and water. It is a mixture of iron oxides and hydroxides.
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rust

    how does it form?
The metal needs to be in contact with an electrolyte. Usually the electrolyte is water but other liquids as well as gases in some instances may serve as electrolytes as well.

The presence of dissolved substances in the electrolyte is necessary. These substances can be dissolved gases such as oxygen, chlorine or bromine gases or dissolved ions such as H+ (hydrogen ion) all of which serve as strong corrosive agents. Pure distilled water with no dissolved substances will not function as an electrolyte and metals subjected to it will not corrode.

The presence of a corrosion cell whereby two portions of the metal surfaces become electrically connected via an electrolyte, salt bridge etc. A portion of the metal surface then becomes anodic (corrodes) giving up metal ions and another portion becomes cathodic, gaining metal ions.

    anti rust products

    electrostatic corrosion protection systems

how this works: it produces a measured and specific negative electrostatic surface charge on the metal surface being protected (your vehicle's body for instance) thus capacitive coupling treats the metal body as if it were the negative half of a capacitor. This negative surface charge serves to interfere with the normal electrochemical corrosion processes that create corrosion on metals.

    and of course your dealership

some places to look for rust
behind the taillight.....under the sealant. press it with your finger and listen for a '' crunchy'' sound, if you hear it. that's rust.
under the battery tray.....the battery often will leak battery acid at some point in the car's life and that as you know can be very corrosive.
and of course the rear qaurter panels and under the back bumper and in the trunk.

    just a few tips

when you grind away all the rust, use a self ecthing primer on the bare metal along with a sealer.

as most people know, primer alone causes rust because it holds water.

also, the rust pits the metal, so make sure you sand the pits out or it will come back.

use a sand blaster if at all possible.

you have to drill out the tac welds....i think there are about 195 or so. i know accordwarrior knows for sure. then a cut here a grind there and it's off.

a place that a lot of people have it is behind their taillights (not the ones on the trunk, but the ones on the body) the rust gets under the joint sealant, if you take off the taillight and push on the sealant it makes a crunchy noise.....that is the sound of rust.

also under the battery tray. often a battery will leak a little acid sometime in the cars life, which is corrosive and will eat away the paint and also accelerate rust. later.

I had that little rust spot forming above the rear fender, cutit out and replaced it withnew metal, but then got a little carried away and decided to widen the rear qtrs, took the front fenders off a 87 accord and grafted them to rear,I also had to form and roll new metal to match the body, its now 3"wider onboth sides heres the pics

                NOTICE THE FLIPUP GAS DOOR

notice the fender in relation to the tire, stock the tire and fender would dam near be flush.

Finished product, appears to be TUCKING 17s,lol, thats normal driving height also,no juice,no air, just planted.

i found a short artical written in trade magazine about different kinds of road salts. apparently, they come in different grades, some mild, some highly corrosive and so on.

                  a) Sodium Chloride (rock salt) NaCl is the most commonly used due to its low cost. NaCl is not very effective at low temperatures, so other, more aggressive chemicals are used.
                  b) Calcium Chloride CaCl2 works at lower temperatures, but costs more than NaCl.
                  c) Magnesium Chloride MgCl2 is the most aggressive of the snow melters, operating at the lowest temperatures, and also the most expensive. It also is very damaging, particularly on automotive glass surfaces. It can etch glass surfaces within several hours. Frequent use of the windshield washers can dilute MgCl2, preventing it from etching the glass. If the glass is etched, use a proper glass polish from a variety of sources, or a quality chrome polish, to remove the damage.
                  d) Brine (salt water) solutions are also sprayed on the roadways in some areas before snowfall, to prevent the snow from adhering to the roadway. If following a sprayer truck, be sure to flush all areas of your vehicle, particularly the undercarriage, to remove all traces of the solution.
                  later.

if you e-mail Counter Act about a price, they will give you a figure around $300, but a little down the road they will e-mail you back with a cheaper price when they run a special on it. i think the special price is $170 ish.

i too want to invest in this protection....i've seen plenty of them bolted to the frames of hot rods. later.

You'll still have to take care of your car with the electrostatic corrosion protection, but they will keep from having the small chips in paint and rusting up right away.

Pretty much with ECP you shouldn't install it and forget about checking up and caring for your car. It will help keep it from becoming a problem quickly though.

I had one on my Firebird, honestly don't know if it made a diff or not but I never saw any rust I had to fix.
                            Hi, I'm Shippo and I have a problem. I keep buying CB7's.
