what to do with my stereo

Well I got a 1990 accord a few days ago and I'm planning the stereo setup. The one in there works pretty good but it's pretty danged weak.

I have a pair of 12" subs in a box that I plan on using. Any brands of basic CD players (that support subs/amplifiers) that work good in these cars? Also is there any input you can give me to a decent stereo?

I was planning on a good head unit, 4 fresh speakers and some subs, nothing wild.

    Thanks

    alpine headunit

infinity or mb quart mids and highs ( there are lots of others good ones though)

    old school rockford amps

    jl audio or rockford subs

that is a good setup and its fairly inexpensive

        Rockford all the way
Alpine makes pretty nice headunits for a reasonable price. They also sound great

BTW- What are the brand of the (2)12s you're planning on using. Remember, it doesn't matter how nice your headunit and amps are, if the subs are crap they will sound like crap.

What I have found in 16 years is to don't be afraid to try a brand. I bought Kenwood back in 93 and stuck with Kenwood until about 2 years ago for head units. Now I am stuck on Panasonic. It's all about the features you like. For the best speakers, this will really be according to what music you like and what your ears like. MB Quart are probably the cleaniest sounding speakers I have heard. However I bought a set of Infinity Reference speakers for 2 different vehicles. As far as amps, just look for RMS or Continous Power. A lot of cheaper amps list peak power like 600w/2 ch. When really the amp only puts out 75w/channel at 4ohms. Just be careful. BTW. I bought a set of MTX subs in 1995. Never hooked them up until 2001. They are still going. And these were the cheaper Road Thunder(RT) series.

I'm a Fan Of Eclipse 8v preout Units, the sound is VERY clean and it has all the features youd need in a unit.

My subs are lightning audio. I got them for the walloping price of $0.00

I had them in my 94 explorer for a while when I had the truck and it sounded very clean, just not loud enough because an explorer is all open air. People did say they could hear me coming from a few blocks away tho

I figure I'll use them because I'm on somewhat of a budget.

Maybe you might help narrow down your search by giving an idea of your budget.

I have no idea... right now I'm just getting the car mechanically sound but I know I want to put a stereo in it.

I know I want a head unit, 4 fresh speakers and an amp to power my subs.

So for say a pioneer setup, what would it set me back for a head unit and speakers?

And the subs are 500w peak each... so what kinda amp would be good?

I wanna keep it to a few hundred bucks. May even look to some used stuff if the quality/price is right.

                      Thanks all for your help!

Well a pioneer hu ranges anywhere from 100 to 500 dollars depending on how nice it is...figure 100-250 for decent speakers so your looking at 200-350 for a decent setup.

that would be without an amp.
and for an ok setup. i wouldn't say decent. haha
uh... if by overboosted you mean "right the fuck on" then, sure, it is.

I agree 100% except for the amp. I would recomment another amp, but its not inexpensive...

You know I have bought used equipment on ebay many times. Just have to be careful. Also you don't have to stick with one manufacture for the entire system. I like swapping brands to see which is better. Rockford is known for their speakers but I would not use their head units. For $200-300 you should be able to get a low to mid level head unit(depends on features you are looking for) and speakers. If you are doing the install yourself you should be able to get a good system for about $700-800. Check out www.sounddomain.com also for deals. Check out the Scratch n Dent section from Crutchfield and Sound Domain.
