Want a roof rack? Or installation specifics to the one you already have? You've come to the right place!
There are 2 major brands. Yakima and Thule. I prefer Yakima.
The cool thing about these two is that you can build a rack to suit your needs, then when it's time for a new car, you can easily move the rack over to it!
How is this possible? By using what's referred to as a "fit kit".
When you build your rack, you'll need crossbars, the brand specific towers, and any attachments you may want.
All of this can get VERY expensive very fast. I suggest buying used, and not all at once. Craigslist is very helpful.
Anyway, for Yakima you'll need:
4 Q Towers
2 48" crossbars
The fit kit. This will depend on which car you have
4 DR = 2 sets of Q 73 clips
2 DR = 2 sets of Q5 Clips
Wagon = 1 Q73 and 1 Q6
SKS locks. I highly recommend them. Again, buy used.
The fit kit will attach to the Q towers and allow you to secure the rack to your specific vehicle.
For Thule, you'll need:
400XT Aero Foot pack
LB 50 load bar 2 pack
4 DR = Kit117
2 DR = Kit 117, and Thule short roof adapter 477
Wagon = Kit 143 (DISCONTINUED) Good luck wagon folks.
Thules Version of the locks. I'm not sure what they're called.
As for the specs of how to set each up, they'll be contained within the Fit kits. I can tell you that for a 4 Door using Yakima clips you'll need 6 inches from the front of the roof and 32" inches in between the bars. Also, the weight capacity for the 4 DR and 2 DR is 125 lbs.
If you have a factory roof rack, Lucky you! Without too much work, you'll be able to use any accessories by either manufacturer. You may need an adapter, but I can't remember the name of it or find it right now.
I hope you found this helpful. I'll update it as I remember more things.
Enjoy!
