ANY BUYING/SELLING IN THIS FORUM WILL RESULT IN AN INSTANT BAN!

Read the rules: http://www.cb7tuner.com/vbb/showthread.php?t=43956

Myself, and the other mods have been very nice and lenient with the rules. We have been deleting threads, and giving out warnings. Some members didn't get the clue and re-posted over and over... Now ANY member buying or selling in this section will be banned... No IF's AND's or BUT's.

Beginner Forum Rules - EVERYBODY read! (old and new members alike!)

Beginners start here. Once you have 30 worthwhile posts (off topic doesn't count) you may post outside of the Beginner forums. Any "whoring" (posting simply to raise your post count) will return your count to 0, or result in a ban.

These are the rules. Read them. Live by them.

1) Absolutely NO flaming! "Flaming" is an outright attack on a member. ALL questions are encouraged to be asked here, no matter how basic. Members with over 30 posts will be subject to a ONE WEEK ban if caught flaming in this forum (and yes, moderators can read deleted posts). Members with under 30 posts will be subject to a ONE DAY ban.

2) Use appropriate language. Racial or sexual slurs will not be tolerated. A ban will be issued at the discretion of the cb7tuner.com staff.

3) No items may be sold in the Beginner forums. Any "for sale" threads will be deleted.

4) Temporarily banned members will be PERMANTLY banned if they are found posting on another account.

The rules can and will be added to. Any updates will be marked in the title.

The rules for the overall forum can be found here:

Everything You'll ever need to know about roof racks!

Want a roof rack? Or installation specifics to the one you already have? You've come to the right place!

There are 2 major brands. Yakima and Thule. I prefer Yakima.

The cool thing about these two is that you can build a rack to suit your needs, then when it's time for a new car, you can easily move the rack over to it!
How is this possible? By using what's referred to as a "fit kit".

When you build your rack, you'll need crossbars, the brand specific towers, and any attachments you may want.

All of this can get VERY expensive very fast. I suggest buying used, and not all at once. Craigslist is very helpful.

    Anyway, for Yakima you'll need:
    4 Q Towers
    2 48" crossbars
The fit kit. This will depend on which car you have
    4 DR = 2 sets of Q 73 clips
    2 DR = 2 sets of Q5 Clips
    Wagon = 1 Q73 and 1 Q6
SKS locks. I highly recommend them. Again, buy used.

The fit kit will attach to the Q towers and allow you to secure the rack to your specific vehicle.

    For Thule, you'll need:
    400XT Aero Foot pack
LB 50 load bar 2 pack
    4 DR = Kit117
2 DR = Kit 117, and Thule short roof adapter 477
Wagon = Kit 143 (DISCONTINUED) Good luck wagon folks.
Thules Version of the locks. I'm not sure what they're called.

As for the specs of how to set each up, they'll be contained within the Fit kits. I can tell you that for a 4 Door using Yakima clips you'll need 6 inches from the front of the roof and 32" inches in between the bars. Also, the weight capacity for the 4 DR and 2 DR is 125 lbs.

If you have a factory roof rack, Lucky you! Without too much work, you'll be able to use any accessories by either manufacturer. You may need an adapter, but I can't remember the name of it or find it right now.

I hope you found this helpful. I'll update it as I remember more things.
    Enjoy!

Nice write up! Which is generally more cheaper, yakima or thule?

And is there a generic brand rack that can be bought for very very cheap. Think of it as something for looks only.

I have a Yakima rack. I originally had it on my sedan using the Q73 clips... I installed it on my wagon using the same fit kit.. Seems to fit fine!

So, you don't NEED to get the Q6 for the rears... I'd recommend it though if you are building for a wagon....(opposed to swapping from a sedan)

I also have a couple of Thule pieces, like J-Bars for a kayak, and a roof box. (Thule's cheapest roof box is a hell of a lot cheaper than the cheapest Yakima roof box.) Those two Thule items work flawlessly with Yakima bars.

          -2 cents.

I'm not sure. I'm all Yakima, and it sure wasn't cheap.

I don't know the generic brand you speak of. I know some local sporting goods stores sell add ons and individual rack pieces that are no name. But I haven't seen anything like you're talking about.

            Sure thing boss!

It's dark out, so you'll have to wait till tomorrow for a better one.
I have the Yakima kit, with:
38" fairing (The only fairing specified for our cars)
            Bow down Kayak carrier
            Front Loader bike rack
And of course, SKS locks all around.

Pali Mo, it looks like you have your answer!
How different are the Q6s from the Q73s? Mine came with Q6's for a BMW, and I was unaware I could've used them. Comparing them side by side, the Q6's seem to be a little longer. IE they'd extend deeper into the door track.

No? That's the new fairing. The old one is more square looking. Not a huge fan of that one either.

Yes on the attachments. It needs a bath and I have too much to do today. Sometime this week I'll get pics posted.
