    cold-air intake disaster

So, yep. Bought a cold-air intake on Ebay. Wasn't shooting for quality, but...it's always been said that you can even use PVC pipe for any type of intake, but as long as you have a pretty decent air filter. So, I did get an air filter for it, waited for it in the mail. It's the blue one. It's only......1 piece? But, that didn't bother me. Was installing it, tight fit man. Very tight fit. Got it braced to the throttle body, wasn't a direct fit, cause it was about 2 inches from the bracket by the battery to brace it down so it doesn't move. Took my tire off, pulled my fender back, and was puttin' my air filter on. The insert to my air filter...it has a little rubber piece that came with it, so it can basically fit piping 3" and up. I noticed when I first took the cold-air pipe out of the box, that it was a bit thin. Yep, too thin. It's about 2 1/4". So, I rigged my filter onto the pipe, and took a drive. What junk. The piping's so thin, that the car strains for air. It hesitates sooooo bad man. I actually thought I was running out of gas a few times, cause it was straining for air on the highway. Put the gas to the floor, it acts like it wants to die, then slowly gets up to speed. And no, the way I rigged it wouldn't bother it at all. I used the piece of rubber that connects the short-ram to the throttle body, threw it on the end of the cold-air, and slid the filter onto that.
Was on my way to Pa, filled the gas tank up. About 35 miles down the road, my needle was already under the F. Usually it takes about 65-70 for the needle to even start falling. Pulled over to the gas station, took it off. (Had the short-ram in my trunk) Put the short-ram back on, and got back on the highway. Oh man!!! So much better!! I swear to you, I was watching...my needle fall. Once I put the short-ram back on, it stopped falling. I mean, yea...I'm having gas mileage problems, but this time I got pretty decent mileage since I cleaned the Plenum out, IAC valve, and changed the fuel filter. I could probably drive the car another 50'ish miles on this tank. That's a 50 mile improvement!! This time, it's PVC time. I'm not payin' 200+ dollars on a damn piece of aluminum piping. I'm sorry. If I gotta do that, I'd just keep the short-ram. So, either PVC time for the cold-air, or I'ma have to get a shield for the filter on the short-ram. Very shitty man. Paid 45 dollars for the product and shipping, and I don't think I can return it. It's an actual manufacture too. Hope their warehouse catches on fire when everyone's at home sleeping.

Yup, restricted piping will mess with you MAP sensor's reading, causing the excess fuel usage and all that extra fuel will mess up the engine's running.

welp, at least now I can take this cold-air to Lowes, and pretty much use it as a diagram so I can get the correct piping for the PVC pipe, rather then having to do allllllll the measurements. Just slide the piping onto it, and build.

It sounds like its too restrictive... but try this... disconnected the battery for like 10-15 minutes so the ECU resets... maybe that would help a lil... also remember the more bends in the piping... the more restrictive the intake... if you're going to make a good custom one... which I did for my CRX a while back... you should make one that makes the least amount of bends and to a pretty cool spot in the engine bay

dude, don't know , but don't be cheap on that, I mean i bought this one off ebay http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/90-93...spagenameZWDVW

i snapped a K&N filter on it and you would belive me, it sounds so fuck`n nice and apart from that my fuel consumption got lower and the power better.
I really don't know much about that piping you bought but sounds no good at all

reset your ecu. you dont have to do it for 10-15 minutes (you could pull your small radio fuse instaed of disconnecting the battery)

If you seriously use PVC piping, you're just going through so much trouble for no thing.

Not sure what the problem was has any one ever seen the "front mount intakes" ? lol. I had one on my protege for a while. It felt like it increased torque in the higher rpms ish, it was pretty cool. A bit bulky though. For a 93 ex auto, what would be more useful, a short ram or cold air?

Because "ebay" isn't a brand. You can get a wide variety of things from that site. Some people get good things, others get garbage.

x3 on the ecu reset. Your ECU had no idea what to do with the change in air flow that you introduced with the new intake. That's why it seemed to hesitate. It wasn't due to lack of air but probably due to lack of fuel. I guess that's one thing that you get when you pay for a real intake. The complete instructions including the information that the ECU has to be reset.

                            SRI ftw.

Bought mine off ebay years ago. Piping is just now starting get holes burned in it(dont ask..). I even managed to utilize the OEM mini-pipes that shot air into the airbox via the fender.

Well, see...I have a short-ram. It's one of the first things I got for the car. Not sure the brand, cause I bought it from a guy that was selling his 93' accord, and took his aftermarket parts off. I bought a neuspeed strut bar, extra valve cover, oil cap, and short-ram intake from him for 160 bucks. (Good deal, aye? ). But, once my car gets warm, especially in the summer, the sun on the hood, heat from the engine, that thing still sucks in some hot air. I reset the ECU. I unhooked my negative, and pulled the ecu fuse and let the car sit over night. It's just odd how, I drove with the cold-air, and felt so restricted, with gas and power, but then put the short-ram back on.....and now it's all better? Mind, I just cleaned my IAC, whole plenum, throttle body, and replaced the fuel filter. Once I put the short-ram back on, I felt even more power than I did before. Fixed my hesitation problem I was having before. (Guess the IAC valve was the problem), thing was filthy. But yea, here's a photo.
