    damn! stripped egr valve bolt.

everyone knows how pesky those egr bolts are to get to since the egr valve has a bulbous top end. anyway, i stripped the front one trying to get it off. it's stripped BAD. nearly rounded! great.. now how can i get it off so i can clean the egr valve??

and assuming the egr valve has never been cleaned in the duration of its life will i notice any increase in mpgs if i clean only it, even without having the ports cleaned yet?

    thanks in advance!

they cleaned mine and i didnt notice a difference. i used an egr block off plate and all highway i acheived 28-29 going about 70+ mph. probably get better mileage with an alignment and 185 tires :o

my only suggestion would be to cut the nut in half or use a bolt extractor, the socket style ones. when im in the south bay, i can try and help you sometime.

<- goto school at de anza

ah.. have you ever had your ports cleaned?

i'm only getting about 24 highway @ 70 and 17ish city! my alignment isn't the best, but still. i've done a FULL tune up in the past three months sans the fuel filter... can't get it off no matter how hard i try, and i really can't mess up a fuel line. i was pulling on it all day today and nothing.

i appreciate that though. what time do you get out? i think it'd be cool meeting up with you sometime possibly at school and just shooting the breeze.

as for the bolt, i'll look into bolt extractors and see what i can do.. are there any other cost effective methods? kind of broke here, gas to school is killing me.

i have a bolt extractor kit, thats why i was going to help you but ive been in your situation before. those egr nuts get soft as hell from all the heat.

you need a wobble extension next time, i have a set as well.
i get out M/W at noon and tu/thr at 3pm but i usually have work right after in belmont so i try and leave as quickly as possible.

have you checked your timing and what condition did your spark plugs look like? hondas have a tendency to run rich.

the egr ports are a bitch so you might be better off grabbing an extra manifold or upgrade to a f22a6 one so that there's no down time when you pull the manifold off. ive also drilled and tapped the holes in a manifold for easier egr port servicing.

they sure are soft! i barely got any torque on it, and my positioning wasn't THAT awkward. way to be well equipped though.

          i get out 1:20 daily, but i've got a break from 11:30-12:20.

i've never checked it's timing, i don't know how, never have, but i've suspected either it is off (timing belt cam timing or ignition timing), or the egr ports are ridiculously clogged. my car really is a bogger and it sounds like one too. when you give it gas it gets LOUD. imagine how a subwoofer "fills" your cabin with bass. that's about how pronouned the bogging sound in my car is when i'm trying to get up to speed on the freeway without really even pushing it which is why i'm curious about the egr port cleaning. i've got a '90 though, so doesn't it make it just that much harder? not to mention the job is a little over my head. drilling the manifold? plugs? i just shouldn't mess with it.. i've redone the whole font suspension, subframe, engine mounts, steering rack, windows, new alternator harness wiring, 02s, axles, pads rotors and bearings, but there's just too much stuff that kicks my ass.

as for the plugs, the tips were a little white on the electrode, it's been a while since i did it so i'm not entirely sure, but i've still got them hanging around here somewhere.

thank you for all the help so far btw, kind sir!

The tools I used in my DIY are a perfect fit..........
I hate it when people say negative things about the EGR threads!
First understand the EGR......when RPM go up the valve lifts with vacuum.

Our cars were made to run with Recirculated Emissions...so if the valve is stuck because of Residue build up...the car wont run properly causing bad MPG's.

Clean it and it will free up and MPG's will go up...........If you choose to block it off good luck with your Smog and MPG's.

What's your opinion on doing just the egr without the ports cleaned? Will that yield any noticeable gains in anything?

                    The thing about that......
If it working properly cleaning wont do anything.
as I said before if its stuck then cleaning it will free it up and MPG's go up.

But you should clean the ports holes......
I might do this sometime during the week and post the pt 2 of my DIY.

You can always seafoam the shit out of your car that will help alot...........I finally did last week it was funny as hell everyone was talking shit.........I started the car and right away smoke everywhere....
I want to do it again just for the smoke not to clean out my car.

For future reference use a swivel socket to get them off.

I've been following your post from the beginning, so you know I'll be watching.

I've seafoamed a bunch of times with two cans over the past year, sometimes it doesn't do anything and other times it makes a big difference, hence why I've done it more than once. Be careful with that stuff though, you don't want to run risk if it's not necessary! Keep in mind it does foul plugs and possibly harms old o2 sensors, and make sure you're changing oil soon after as well. I did just buy a third can but I'm weary of using it, especially since I just put it new oil and didn't do it too long ago so I'll just keep it hanging around for much later.

I'll have to keep that in mind. Unfortunately I didn't have one handy at the time.

You have to put the seafoam in the manifold to clean the egr, not the oil.

A clogged EGR can cause a misfire. A blocked EGR does not help your gas mileage, but I still get almost 30mpg in my cammed H22 sedan with that and my charcoal canister blocked, and we don't have emissions testing here, haha. Stock H22 Preludes are only supposed to get 28 or so HWY.

Irwin's "bolt-out" socket style extractors are awesome. After you get the valve off, you can remove the studs and switch to bolts or socket caps or whatever...something you can get at better if there's ever a next time.

"I hate it when people say negative things about the EGR threads!"

btw, that is some funny shit to get upset about, lol.
After a while you're like " Say something about my EGR threads again, I DARE you...Say it to my FACE!!!!"

                            I had the same problem

Hammer an 11mm onto it attached to a long extension and a small breaker bar, then hammer the breaker bar slowly and twist little by little.

You really need to jar those nuts in order to break torque !
