ANY BUYING/SELLING IN THIS FORUM WILL RESULT IN AN INSTANT BAN!

Read the rules: http://www.cb7tuner.com/vbb/showthread.php?t=43956

Myself, and the other mods have been very nice and lenient with the rules. We have been deleting threads, and giving out warnings. Some members didn't get the clue and re-posted over and over... Now ANY member buying or selling in this section will be banned... No IF's AND's or BUT's.

Beginner Forum Rules - EVERYBODY read! (old and new members alike!)

Beginners start here. Once you have 30 worthwhile posts (off topic doesn't count) you may post outside of the Beginner forums. Any "whoring" (posting simply to raise your post count) will return your count to 0, or result in a ban.

These are the rules. Read them. Live by them.

1) Absolutely NO flaming! "Flaming" is an outright attack on a member. ALL questions are encouraged to be asked here, no matter how basic. Members with over 30 posts will be subject to a ONE WEEK ban if caught flaming in this forum (and yes, moderators can read deleted posts). Members with under 30 posts will be subject to a ONE DAY ban.

2) Use appropriate language. Racial or sexual slurs will not be tolerated. A ban will be issued at the discretion of the cb7tuner.com staff.

3) No items may be sold in the Beginner forums. Any "for sale" threads will be deleted.

4) Temporarily banned members will be PERMANTLY banned if they are found posting on another account.

The rules can and will be added to. Any updates will be marked in the title.

The rules for the overall forum can be found here:

Read them. You will be expected to follow them.

    Possible noob question

Hey guy's, I searched and didn't find anything on it so I'm posting this up.

I was thinking about getting a CAI but I'm scared cause up here in Wisconsin we get a good amount of rain and I don't want to hydro-lock my engine.

Well the question is do bypass valves or hydro shields really work?

If you guy's don't think it's worth the money to get that stuff, then should I just get a SRI?

    Thanks.

    Yes they work.

And honestly the difference between a CAI and a short ram isn't all that noticeable... so I'd honestly just go with a short ram and eliminate the whole bypass valve issue.

I have a CAI, and if I were to do it again, I'd get a short ram. I have a rusty hole where it passes through to the fenderwell... I'm not happy about that.

Bypass valves do work just fine, though. As does careful driving... I don't have a bypass valve, and I've been running my CAI for nearly 7 years. I live in swampland. If I see a big puddle, I don't drive through it. A little splash won't hurt anything. You have to submerge that sucker in order to suck water up there. You could probably half-submerge the filter while the engine was idling or at low RPM, and it would draw enough air from the unsubmerged part that it wouldn't even be able to draw water up into the tube.

Ok very good to know, short ram for sure.

          Thank you both.

You could submerge half the filter at full throttle and be safe. As long as there's a decent amount of air to suck up, the water will be too heavy for the suction to pull it up the tube. To see what I mean, lower a drinking straw towards a glass of water while you inhale through it and see how close you have to be for it to pull.

The purpose of this forum is to create a database of information. I'm not going to delete your thread because your question has been answered.

However, a more descriptive title would have made searching a bit easier... this is the Beginner Forum... "noob questions" belong here. NOBODY is going to say "hey, I have a noob question... let's search for that!"

Be descriptive in your thread titles in the future, or they will be deleted before you ever get an answer

I've never had a bypass valve and have always ran a CAI. Just get one that's a two piece. If it's going to rain and you don't want to worry about puddles then you can still take the bottom half off and make it a short ram. Like Deev and Poet said though you'd have to really get your car in a deep ass puddle before something happend.

I usually see them mounted in between where the 2 pipes connect if you have a 2 piece cai or right on the throttle body if it's a one piece and you don't want to cut it in half.

It'd be better if you named your thread according to the topic of your question. This is the noob section... posting it here is enough of a statement that it's a noob question. At least now when someone searches for "noob question" in the future, they'll find it!

Bypass valves work great. However, you only risk hydrolock when you actually submerge the filter anyway... so don't drive like a dumbass in the rain, charging into unknown puddles. I've had a CAI since 2003, I live in the swamplands (flooding in even a small storm), and I never once had a problem.

A short ram is easier all around, though, and the performance isn't considerably worse. The only real reason to get a CAI is if you don't want a filter in your engine bay.

Go with the SRI, it has a better low end throttle response on our low compression naturally aspirated. CAI is better on forced induction or high compression vehicles, which produces much more heat under the hood.
