ANY BUYING/SELLING IN THIS FORUM WILL RESULT IN AN INSTANT BAN!

Read the rules: http://www.cb7tuner.com/vbb/showthread.php?t=43956

Myself, and the other mods have been very nice and lenient with the rules. We have been deleting threads, and giving out warnings. Some members didn't get the clue and re-posted over and over... Now ANY member buying or selling in this section will be banned... No IF's AND's or BUT's.

Beginner Forum Rules - EVERYBODY read! (old and new members alike!)

Beginners start here. Once you have 30 worthwhile posts (off topic doesn't count) you may post outside of the Beginner forums. Any "whoring" (posting simply to raise your post count) will return your count to 0, or result in a ban.

These are the rules. Read them. Live by them.

1) Absolutely NO flaming! "Flaming" is an outright attack on a member. ALL questions are encouraged to be asked here, no matter how basic. Members with over 30 posts will be subject to a ONE WEEK ban if caught flaming in this forum (and yes, moderators can read deleted posts). Members with under 30 posts will be subject to a ONE DAY ban.

2) Use appropriate language. Racial or sexual slurs will not be tolerated. A ban will be issued at the discretion of the cb7tuner.com staff.

3) No items may be sold in the Beginner forums. Any "for sale" threads will be deleted.

4) Temporarily banned members will be PERMANTLY banned if they are found posting on another account.

The rules can and will be added to. Any updates will be marked in the title.

The rules for the overall forum can be found here:

What the hell does this mean?

There is a dude here in my area that is sellin his coupe for $350. I emailed him and he said everything is good except the engine. He said the drive pulley has come out the engine block. I know a little about engines but I'm not too sure what the hell that means and how hard it is to fix. Regardless, it might be a good buy cuz I could just swap an engine if need be. So could somebody enlighten me please?

Either the pulley bolt head snapped off (best case and relatively cheap fix) or the crankshaft broke (much more involved fix and may as well swap in another block).

Our crankshafts RARELY have mechanical failure unless there was a pre-existing oiling issue so if the crankshaft did seize you're looking at swapping the motor anyway.

i bet he didnt have the holding pin installed i dont remember the exact name but its something that honda actually recalled and its made to hold the crank in. if youve had your tbelt changed by a shop that knowes what they are doing or by honda then it was most likely installed. if not then it just eventually wobbles out and your motor is DEAD. expect to put a new motor in this car if u get it.

What you are referring to is the Balance Shaft Seal Retainer recall, in which the balance shaft seal would pop out causing the motor to lose oil pressure...Honda designed a retainer to stop the seal from popping out...that has nothing to do with the crankshaft or holding it in...

OP, more than likely the crank pully bolt either came loose or borke off. It's common, if not torqued properly the bolt will back out. Hopefully it did no damage to the snout of the crank or the keyway pin, although usually if any damage occurs it can be fixed with a file or dremel. I'd pick that car up for that price. Should be a relatively quick fix.

Could you imagine if the head of the crank bolt snapped off, trying to get that out? WOW, talk about stupid hard work. those bolts are insane to get off by the average person when the head is still on them.

If the drive pulley is off of the crank shaft end, then you won't have power steering, an alternator, or A/C. If the bolt is just gone, implying that it backed out and then just fell out, and the pulley is gone too you'll have to replace the pulley and probably all the belts except the timing belt.

I don't think the timing belt cog would back off just because the lower timing cover would prevent it.

350 isn't too bad. Worst case scenario is that you part it out for more than what you paid for it.

Good luck with the buy. If you find it too hard to fix there are a multitude of guys with spare engines or blocks they can sell, including myself. I have a spare H22 and F23. Let me know and I'll hook you up.

very possibly could have lost the key for the crank pulley. once that lets go the crank bolt can and will be wiggled out. the end result is a sounds similar to a spun bearing and a huge wobble in the pulley because it's being held on by belts.

i had this happen and i though i fucked something. it was just a loose bolt. wound up having to change the key and mega air gun the bolt on.

x2.... had this on mine. New alternator, and it had the wrong pulley on it (too wide). Because the belt was now being pulled to one side, it actually pulled my harmonic balancer apart on the crankshaft. It was really pissed.

Turned out to be a fairly easy fix though. My parts car's engine was so seized, a big wrench easily removed the crank bolt. On my car, I got my dad to hold a huge pipe wrench on the pulled while i turned the crank bolt out.

So if it is separated (It looks like half the pulley is still on the crank, and the outer part came off, I'd say go for it. No idea what one of those harmonic balancers is worth though.

this is a little off topic, but barely...

To those of you having trouble getting the harmonic balancer bolt off (or torqued on properly) I suggest one of these tools... a mechanic friend of mine just happened to have one when my balance shaft seal popped out on me, and after using it, i went and bought one... worth every penny (30-40 bucks)
