ANY BUYING/SELLING IN THIS FORUM WILL RESULT IN AN INSTANT BAN!

Read the rules: http://www.cb7tuner.com/vbb/showthread.php?t=43956

Myself, and the other mods have been very nice and lenient with the rules. We have been deleting threads, and giving out warnings. Some members didn't get the clue and re-posted over and over... Now ANY member buying or selling in this section will be banned... No IF's AND's or BUT's.

Beginner Forum Rules - EVERYBODY read! (old and new members alike!)

Beginners start here. Once you have 30 worthwhile posts (off topic doesn't count) you may post outside of the Beginner forums. Any "whoring" (posting simply to raise your post count) will return your count to 0, or result in a ban.

These are the rules. Read them. Live by them.

1) Absolutely NO flaming! "Flaming" is an outright attack on a member. ALL questions are encouraged to be asked here, no matter how basic. Members with over 30 posts will be subject to a ONE WEEK ban if caught flaming in this forum (and yes, moderators can read deleted posts). Members with under 30 posts will be subject to a ONE DAY ban.

2) Use appropriate language. Racial or sexual slurs will not be tolerated. A ban will be issued at the discretion of the cb7tuner.com staff.

3) No items may be sold in the Beginner forums. Any "for sale" threads will be deleted.

4) Temporarily banned members will be PERMANTLY banned if they are found posting on another account.

The rules can and will be added to. Any updates will be marked in the title.

The rules for the overall forum can be found here:

Read them. You will be expected to follow them.

Before digging for it, make sure it is the problem. If the VSS is bad, odometer, speedometer, and cruise control ALL will not work. If you have a manual, it should have some electrical checks to make sure its the VSS, not a bad connection/wire somewhere.

Woah, I've been out working on trying to get the bolt on the VSS on the passengers side out, but it's a pain in the ass. the extension i have does not fit, I just need my own tools.

Anyway, what are these electrical checks I can do?

Before you replace the VSS a few checks you can do is:

          1) Observe if the spedometer is malfunctioning (sometimes reading correct speed sometimes not or on zero)

          2) Try operating the cruise control and see if it will hold the speed you set consistently

          3) Check the wiring loom to the VSS is not loose, corroded or damaged.

          4) Check if your mileage counter is working consistently.

            Thanks.

I am thinking the VSS may not even be bad... I don't have an extremely dirty engine bay, but the VSS was COVERED in gunk. I'm gonna pull it, clean it, and try it out.

            Thanks again, everyone.

Good thinking. So many people replace components without cleaning the connections first, and end up wasting money. I blew $300 that way myself to learn that lesson!

Also, if anything is difficult to do... you probably don't have the proper tools. Step back, think, and ask questions if you need to... but always use the proper tools. You'll make the job much easier, and you'll greatly reduce the risk of damage or injury. That's another lesson I learned the hard way!

Yeah that's something I came to that conclusion last night, I just don't have the right tools right now. In fact, I don't own any tools, I'm borrowing a friend's generic tool box and the problem is that the socket extension is too wide.

I just got paid this morning so I'm going to buy some tools today. I can't move from this point without them.

Make sure when you take the sensor apart you don't loose the piece that the gear spins between the top and bottom. Made that mistake before.

As Mike said make sure it is bad before you change it. I once swapped fuel pumps only to find out the main relay was bad. But ya live and learn.

Yeah, I have a small about on money to throw around with this, so I'm definitely checking to make sure it's the problem first. Blindly replacing parts is no the way to go here.. And yeah, will make sure not to lose the part, I don't think I'll have a problem with that, but it's not like it's going to fall INTO the trans, will it?

It won't fall INTO the trans, but you already know how difficult it is to get to the VSS, just imaging trying to find that little drive rod if you drop it. If you're lucky, it would fall all the way through to the ground.
