Ok, my idle has been acting up for a while. i noticed when i was driving home my temp gauge is normal as it always is. But i noticed smoke coming out and it felt like it was overheating so i shut it off. i also had a fluctuating idle. i let it cool off for a bit then i drove home. when i got home i noticed my cooling fans wern't coming on. i checked my fuse for it (20a) and it looked brand new.could this be a bad relay? if so how do i check?

Beginner Forum Rules - EVERYBODY read! (old and new members alike!)
Beginners start here. Once you have 30 worthwhile posts (off topic doesn't count) you may post outside of the Beginner forums. Any "whoring" (posting simply to raise your post count) will return your count to 0, or result in a ban.
These are the rules. Read them. Live by them.
1) Absolutely NO flaming! "Flaming" is an outright attack on a member. ALL questions are encouraged to be asked here, no matter how basic. Members with over 30 posts will be subject to a ONE WEEK ban if caught flaming in this forum (and yes, moderators can read deleted posts). Members with under 30 posts will be subject to a ONE DAY ban.
2) Use appropriate language. Racial or sexual slurs will not be tolerated. A ban will be issued at the discretion of the cb7tuner.com staff.
3) No items may be sold in the Beginner forums. Any "for sale" threads will be deleted.
4) Temporarily banned members will be PERMANTLY banned if they are found posting on another account.
The rules can and will be added to. Any updates will be marked in the title.
The rules for the overall forum can be found here:

Smoke (or steam?) coming from where, the exhaust or from the engine bay? The cooling fans only come one when they need to, if the temperature is running normal, they probably don't need to come on. How long did you sit and wait for them to come on? How bad is the fluctuating idle? Hunting a littlle bit or jumping hundreds of RPM? Easiest way to check the fans is to turn on the A/C, if I'm not mistaken, both should come on. Momre info gets better help.90 LX 4dr 5 spd 396,014 (sold 1/1/2022) - MRT: http://www.cb7tuner.com/vbb/showthread.php?t=201450

Im pretty sure it was steam. i was trying to bleed the system earlier and the fluctualting idle started after i reved it a bit, and the cooling fans didn't come on. so i shut the engine off. should i keep runing it even throught the idle? i cleaned the IACV the FITV and everything before this, but what im worried about is if its overheating too much. How do i know if all of the air is out of the system? btw my system is at the MAX line.Ok just turned on the a/c and NEITHER of the fans came on. How do i fix this? idle is 800rpm-1500rpm)Last edited by Drifting in 808; 12-05-2010, 06:42 PM.

Steam coming from where? I'm sorry, I have to ask, how are you bleeding the system? The only "MAX" line I am aware of is on the overflow tank and that can be full even if the radiator is empty. With the engine off, system cool, make sure the radiator is full, open the bleeder screw until there is just coolant coming out (no bubbles), then close the bleeder. Top off the radiator if necessary. Start the car, let it run until it heats up (thermostat opens), then open the bleeder again until just anti-freeze comes out. Top off the radiator if necessary, then put the cap back on.
I've found that if I jack the front of the car up (or park it uphill if you have a sloped driveway) it helps the air migrate to the radiator and I can simply bleed it at the thermostat, then fill the radiator, and no more bleeding is necessary after starting the car.90 LX 4dr 5 spd 396,014 (sold 1/1/2022) - MRT: http://www.cb7tuner.com/vbb/showthread.php?t=201450

Coolant is filled up to the max in the overflow and also inside the radiator its full to the top. How i was told to bleed it was take off the radiator cap , turn the heat on HIGH and fan off. let it run till the cooling fans come on, but my fans never came on. i let it run for about 20 mins before i shut it off. The steam was coming out from the top of the radiator( cap off )Originally posted by fleetw00d View PostSteam coming from where? I'm sorry, I have to ask, how are you bleeding the system? After 20 minutes, steam from the open radiator would be normal. Did you open the bleeder on top of the thermostat housing?90 LX 4dr 5 spd 396,014 (sold 1/1/2022) - MRT: http://www.cb7tuner.com/vbb/showthread.php?t=201450
