ANY BUYING/SELLING IN THIS FORUM WILL RESULT IN AN INSTANT BAN!

Read the rules: http://www.cb7tuner.com/vbb/showthread.php?t=43956

Myself, and the other mods have been very nice and lenient with the rules. We have been deleting threads, and giving out warnings. Some members didn't get the clue and re-posted over and over... Now ANY member buying or selling in this section will be banned... No IF's AND's or BUT's.

Beginner Forum Rules - EVERYBODY read! (old and new members alike!)

Beginners start here. Once you have 30 worthwhile posts (off topic doesn't count) you may post outside of the Beginner forums. Any "whoring" (posting simply to raise your post count) will return your count to 0, or result in a ban.

These are the rules. Read them. Live by them.

1) Absolutely NO flaming! "Flaming" is an outright attack on a member. ALL questions are encouraged to be asked here, no matter how basic. Members with over 30 posts will be subject to a ONE WEEK ban if caught flaming in this forum (and yes, moderators can read deleted posts). Members with under 30 posts will be subject to a ONE DAY ban.

2) Use appropriate language. Racial or sexual slurs will not be tolerated. A ban will be issued at the discretion of the cb7tuner.com staff.

3) No items may be sold in the Beginner forums. Any "for sale" threads will be deleted.

4) Temporarily banned members will be PERMANTLY banned if they are found posting on another account.

The rules can and will be added to. Any updates will be marked in the title.

The rules for the overall forum can be found here:

    Exhaust Gaskets

I recent swapped my exhaust manifold and catback. I went to a test pipe for a while, but it's too loud and nasty sounding, so I want to go back to my stock cat. Unfortunately it was mighty rusty and the flanges seem to be bent, so the ebay gaskets leak quite badly. What would you recommend for gaskets that'll seal up with this imperfect flange? I'd prefer not to use gasket maker, because I'm not in a good position to let it set for 24 hours. Thanks in advance.

Have you tried doubling up the gaskets? As long as the flanges aren't too warped. Your best option might be to have new flanges welded onto your old cat, or just get rid of the flanges and have it permenantly welded up. You could always use the test pipe for donor flanges

Not a bad idea, actually. I've got a friend that can weld stuff, I'm just unsure how well the old material (steel I presume) would weld to the stainless.

If ones mild steel, and the other is stainless, then you DO NOT want to weld them together. It will rust out insanely fast after the first time it gets wet due to a chemical reaction called galvanic corrosion.

That's good to know. In that case I'll see about acquiring or making a pair of steel flanges for it.

oil soaked pizza box cutout will work. Cut 2 gaskets outta a pizza box, soak em in oil, and bolt em down. It will hold until you can either get a good resonator or fix something up as a solution which has better mating surfaces.

You can weld those metals together, just sand/paint em with some bbq grill paint and it will keep the rust out for a long while. Again another long term bandaid solution while you source a nice resonator.

All good solutions. Just out of interest for the future, what would people recommend for resonators that'll bolt on where my cat is? Of course first I'd want to chop off my ebay fart can (although I must say, it's doing a surprisingly decent job at quieting down my car. Albeit without an especially nice tone.)

This won't work. The exhaust produces water, so it will still rust from the inside.

All galvanic corrosion needs is some water, it doesn't even have to be direct contact either, the water in the air (humidity) is enough to cause it to rust. The higher the humidity the faster it will rust. Thats some Metallurgy for you.

I took a look around and turns out aftermarket catalytic converters are a lot cheaper than I thought. A magnaflow runs about 70 dollars. So here's a question: Would it be worth it to get the 2.5 inch universal and weld my own flanges to it, or should I just get the direct-fit 2 inch? My exhaust is 2.5 inches.

There is a copper gasket adhesive sealing spray you could use. spray and double up your gaskets
