ANY BUYING/SELLING IN THIS FORUM WILL RESULT IN AN INSTANT BAN!

Read the rules: http://www.cb7tuner.com/vbb/showthread.php?t=43956

Myself, and the other mods have been very nice and lenient with the rules. We have been deleting threads, and giving out warnings. Some members didn't get the clue and re-posted over and over... Now ANY member buying or selling in this section will be banned... No IF's AND's or BUT's.

Beginner Forum Rules - EVERYBODY read! (old and new members alike!)

Beginners start here. Once you have 30 worthwhile posts (off topic doesn't count) you may post outside of the Beginner forums. Any "whoring" (posting simply to raise your post count) will return your count to 0, or result in a ban.

These are the rules. Read them. Live by them.

1) Absolutely NO flaming! "Flaming" is an outright attack on a member. ALL questions are encouraged to be asked here, no matter how basic. Members with over 30 posts will be subject to a ONE WEEK ban if caught flaming in this forum (and yes, moderators can read deleted posts). Members with under 30 posts will be subject to a ONE DAY ban.

2) Use appropriate language. Racial or sexual slurs will not be tolerated. A ban will be issued at the discretion of the cb7tuner.com staff.

3) No items may be sold in the Beginner forums. Any "for sale" threads will be deleted.

4) Temporarily banned members will be PERMANTLY banned if they are found posting on another account.

The rules can and will be added to. Any updates will be marked in the title.

The rules for the overall forum can be found here:

    Sideview Mirror Removal

Does anyone know if these are glued to a backing? I need to separate the glass from everything else.

I am interested in re-silvering the mirrors to improve visibility.

As in the glass itself? It's glued to a plastic "plate" which is connected to the motor that moves the mirror itself.

Forgive me, but what is "re-silvering"?

Re-silvering is the process of reapplying silver to that back surface of the glass to restore mirror quality. Google resilvering.

It is cheaper to do this than to buy used mirrors or let alone new ones.

I've never resilvered one; I suspect it won't be as nice as new mirror glass. If you are careful, the glass can be removed and replaced. Find one at a JY where the housing is broken, but the glass intact (they should only charge you for the glass). If I remember correctly, I used a heat gun to soften the plastic around the glass to get it out.

^~heat gun is a necessity. i have never successfully removed one without a gun.

Thanks OP for the new terminology. I had never heard of re-silvering prior to this thread.

There is a company I found will cut new mirrors for 15/mirror. I think I'll go that route, hey do recommend using a certain mirror glue to replace them on the backing. If you use heat on the back brace does it get ruined?

There isn't a lot of glue on the back, the black plastic has a lip on it that does most of the retaining. You don't want to melt the mirror holder, just make it flexible enough to free the glass. JY probably sell you one for $5.

I have no JY nearby to salvage from. I do think it would be cheaper than any of the other options.

Just so you know car mirrors and regular mirrors are different. Your side view mirrors are made so they don't reflect light like a normal mirror would.

re-silvering your side view mirror with normal process won't give you the same view as the original.

Ditto, I spent $35 for two mint mirrors in a junkyard.

I followed up on the advice and went to a JY, got two mirrors same color and mint condition for under 20.

                          Thanks for the help.

In my experience, you should be able to simply pry them with a flat head, and the mirror glass, and it's plastic tray will pop out. There is a piece on the back of the plastic tray that clips onto the motor.

For the cb theres like 2 or 3 screws at the bottom of the actual mirror "housing" unscrew those and the mirror falls out. No prying.
