ANY BUYING/SELLING IN THIS FORUM WILL RESULT IN AN INSTANT BAN!

Read the rules: http://www.cb7tuner.com/vbb/showthread.php?t=43956

Myself, and the other mods have been very nice and lenient with the rules. We have been deleting threads, and giving out warnings. Some members didn't get the clue and re-posted over and over... Now ANY member buying or selling in this section will be banned... No IF's AND's or BUT's.

Beginner Forum Rules - EVERYBODY read! (old and new members alike!)

Beginners start here. Once you have 30 worthwhile posts (off topic doesn't count) you may post outside of the Beginner forums. Any "whoring" (posting simply to raise your post count) will return your count to 0, or result in a ban.

These are the rules. Read them. Live by them.

1) Absolutely NO flaming! "Flaming" is an outright attack on a member. ALL questions are encouraged to be asked here, no matter how basic. Members with over 30 posts will be subject to a ONE WEEK ban if caught flaming in this forum (and yes, moderators can read deleted posts). Members with under 30 posts will be subject to a ONE DAY ban.

2) Use appropriate language. Racial or sexual slurs will not be tolerated. A ban will be issued at the discretion of the cb7tuner.com staff.

3) No items may be sold in the Beginner forums. Any "for sale" threads will be deleted.

4) Temporarily banned members will be PERMANTLY banned if they are found posting on another account.

The rules can and will be added to. Any updates will be marked in the title.

Newb with major oil leak - 92 CB7

    Greetings All.
Just bought a 92 LX, Manual, Sedan with 116k miles on it for $500 bucks cuz it sprung a huge oil leak one day and dude doesn't know squat about cars..... Now it's mine .

For background 6k miles ago timing belt, waterpump, belts, coolant, plugs, rotor, cap replaced.

    - So, the oil leak, it kinda pees out the left side of the timing cover, right above where it has a bulge (hump) towards the front of the car (exhaust side). My first thought after some searching is perhaps the balance shaft seal blew out?

    - It also has belt squeal on startup - both belts are tight and dry.

    - Compression test was done - 150, 60, 160, 90 receipt says prob burnt valves. Maybe, but looks like I am changing head gasket - guess I will get valves cut while the head is off.

so thoughts on the oil leak please....

    Rick

Check the camshaft seal, front main seal, and valve cover gasket for that leak as well.

For the loss of compression, you can listen for the leak. Put compressed air in the cylinder, and listen to the intake hose and to the muffler. listen for air hissing out of either one.

If that timing belt has oil on it, it needs to be replaced.

Most likely culprit is the front balance shaft seal; it has a tendency to pop out - I had it happen on one of mine a few miles from home; was able to get it home with several quarts of oil. Honda offered a retainer bracket that bolts on with one of the timing cover bolts to retain the seal in place. The balance shaft seal retainer is part number 06923-P0A-306.

So, rechecked compression today because I don't trust service centers. I got 185/115/180/90. In work pulling head. Valve job, surfaced, and pressure checked is about $150 at my local shop.

A major leak there is probably the balance shaft seal. The 92 that I just bought had the same problem. Dorman makes a seal kit that comes with a retainer bracket like the Honda kit. (I normally buy a separate, higher quality seal from Beck/Arnley and use it with the Dorman bracket, Dorman quality isn't always the best).

With 116k miles the bottom end didn't concern me but I probably should do that just in case......
